Jim Spencer of the Sox used to choke up all the time with two strikes. Regarding Burger, this is small consolation but he may help get the Marlins into the playoffs at the expense of the Cubs. That's not all bad.2 points

Even with Moncada, his last 28 days of .337 / .382 / .972 gives me some hope that maybe he can be good again and if so, hes a very trade-able asset at the deadline next season. But it would be so fitting to trade Moncada to KC for Perez while Moncada puts up a 5 WAR season and KC moves him for some high level prospect(s) at the deadline while we have Perez doing his best Grandal impression and on the books for 22 million in 2025.2 points

The accidental discharge of a firearm is generally treated as a misdemeanor with a fine. The victims aren't seeking justice. The venue doesn't seem to be pushing for an investigation. With so many unsolved violent crimes I can see this not getting much police time. A fell down a bullet trajectory projections rabbit hole and was fascinated by the science involved. Could a shot be from outside? Theoretically yes. Without a doubt in my mind. Could two land side by side. Too amazing to believe.1 point

Agreed if it was health, other family issue or minor infraction he isn't wiped clean so quickly and remains on leave especially if it's health. Nate Davis is a prime example of that. The silence on the legality of it to me speaks volumes. FBI probably didn't raid Hals Hall but informed them that there is an issue and confiscated his belongings. The professionalism with Poles and hopefully Warren are needed here.1 point

Sure, replace one cooked catcher with another that's gonna make $42 million over the next 2 years. Just...why? Somehow, Perez has less WAR than Grandal this year with more playing time. That's hard to do.1 point

I'm not even basing it off of his comments. They tried to get him at the deadline. With the connection to Grifol, I think it's likely.1 point

Given what we have seen from that franchise, I find it doubtful that the Royals are going to be desperate to move payroll such that they would make a move like this. Their total salary this year is $93 million and a lot of that is currently on the IL or guys who were traded away so there might be insurance things that offset them. Their total committed payroll next year is about $40 million, and $10 million of that was to release Hunter Dozier. They will have to take a few million in costs for arbitration guys and a few million more to fill out their roster, but this is a team that should already be raking in money due to revenue sharing alone. They really aren't in a position where they are desperate to move this contract to the point that they would give up talent to move it. Quite the opposite in fact, I'd expect them to spend some money to fill out their roster this offseason. Their payroll commitments are probably in the $55 million range depending on guys' arbitration numbers, and they've spent $70-$90 million each of the past few seasons with much higher totals the years coming off their playoff appearances. Perez may be overpaid, but this is far from a situation where they obviously need to dump the contract so badly that we should expect them to throw in something of value with him. So far, the Royals have been a losing franchise, but they haven't stripped themselves down to a $30 million payroll like some like the As, Orioles, or Pirates. This guy is a long time representative of their organization, and I'm guessing fairly popular with the fans there although I don't know for sure that part...this would not be their style of move. Just this year, they brought back and probably overpaid one of their former players in Greinke just so that they had someone for their fans to cheer. They also had multiple teams at least showing interest in Perez at the trade deadline in 2023 including the White Sox, so they have reason to think that a large portion of his contract is movable if they decide they do want to cut costs in the future. Maybe if you take on the majority of his contract they'd move him without a return in the trade, but I'm not sure about that, they might well demand an actual prospect for him despite his contract given their financial stability, his status as a long-term veteran, and the potential to have multiple teams showing interest in him at the trade deadline next year if they hold onto him.1 point

September 20, 1902 - Jim “Nixey” Callahan threw the first no-hitter in franchise history as he beat the Tigers. The Sox gave him all the runs he needed by scoring three in the first inning. The Sox won it 3-0 in Chicago. The Tigers got one runner as far as third base but that was it for the afternoon. Callahan walked two batters on the day. Callahan was a two-way player for a good chunk of his career, from 1897 to 1903. So, at the time of this no-hitter in the 1902 season, he pitched in 35 games and played outfield in 23 others. By the 1903, he’d shift more or less full time to third base. September 20, 1908 - Sox pitcher Frank Smith tossed his second no-hitter beating the Philadelphia A’s 1-0 in Chicago. The Sox scored in the ninth inning to win the game. The run was driven in by shortstop Freddy Parent. Smith pitched that day with the little finger of his hand being stiff and sore from trying to stop a hot shot against the Indians in his previous start. This date, September 20, is also the only date in franchise history where multiple no-hitters have been thrown on over the years. September 20, 2005 - With the White Sox struggling through eight losses in 11 games — the worst slump of what would become a rare, wire-to-wire first-place season — Joe Crede slugged a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th for a sayonara shot that upended second-place Cleveland, 7-6. The White Sox had the game in hand, but rookie Bobby Jenks blew the second save of his career in the ninth, furthering the trend of the club over the past 13 days, as Cleveland shaved six games off of a once nine and a half game lead in the A.L. Central Division. Chicago wasn’t out of the woods yet, as over the next few days Cleveland would trim the division lead to a game and a half but a late kick saw the White Sox swell the lead back to its final six games, including an end-of-season sweep of the Tribe that knocked them out of the playoffs entirely. Combining the five-game winning streak to end the regular season with the 11-1 run in the playoffs, the White Sox ended 2005 winning 16 of 17 games. The homer was Crede’s second of the contest, capping a 3 for 5, three-RBI day.1 point

At least it means Getz is willing to bring in accomplished staff. Kenny and Rick wanted cronies and people they could control. Their permanent coaching staff over multiple managerial regimes also served as clubhouse rats (Boston remains Jerry’s rat). Jerry doesn’t want to pay three people to not work in 2024 (KW, RH, PG), so I can see one more year for major improvement (not likely) in a likely 60s/70s win season and then bring in someone else.1 point

The move seems to be a good one and people are commending it online. By all accounts, this is someone who the Sox probably should’ve hired to be GM. A quick glance at his resume tells me that he is more accomplished than Getz is right now.1 point

But I think the issue right now is the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction, which is what Olsen was referring to. What it seems like in watching these two games this season, there are strict orders NOT to run, we need to see if you can figure out the pocket, so that's all we want you to do. I get that on paper, but I don't think it's the way to go about it. Sort of a weird example, but say the Mariners told Ichrio "Listen, we know you can spray it to all fields, but we need power on this team, so we want you going up there pulling the ball and putting it into the seats every time you go to the plate." That would impact his swing, you would see his HR rate rise but his average fall. And most importantly, that's not who Ichiro was. Now, if you put a strategy where you wanted him to work on his HR stroke, but not go all-in and take away what he does best from his game, I think there is a way to accomplish that where it's not so severe. Again, there is a lot of nuance here. This is not trying to totally remove blame from Fields. There were multiple times in Game 2 where he had a clean pocket and open receivers, and ended up taking a sack. Can't happen consistency. It's a problem, and he won't be a successful QB if that continues. I also understand the Bears didn't look at this as a playoff year, and they want to be sure of what they have in Fields before making a decision on what to do moving forward. I understand all that. The point is...forcing him to only throw in the pocket and not letting him improvise with his legs when available seems like the wrong approach from a growth or mental standpoint. I don't think it's helping his development.1 point

You weren't alone on that front. This franchise flushed multiple seasons down the toilet and the prize at the end of the rainbow was one division crown and a total ass kicking in the playoffs. I hope to never see another tank job on the South Side of Chicago for the rest of my days.1 point

That's the one area you don't have to worry about with the Sox. Stone, Ozzie, Gordon, Podz, Our Chuck, Frank (some more than others) have all been openly critical. Far more than any other team's broadcast team's. They aren't the Orioles.1 point

You know what is probably ultimately most galling? I probably should make this its own thread. The Twins are 7 or 8 over .500 and have the division in the bag. Since 2005, the division has remained crap and the Sox can't even consistently field a team the last 18 years to regularly win division titles. The Sox out of all the teams in this worthless division should have dominated it the last 18 years. That's why I was against the stupid tank job and rebuild job that failed. Just do it the ol fashioned way, get some free agents to go with your Sale, Buehrle types and Frank Thomas types and Abreu types and fricking hang around .500 and win the damn division. Once you get in the playoffs even as a .500ish Central Division champ, you always have the chance to catch fire like the 05 postseason and win it all. Sox should be dominating that division and instead are division patsies. It's really sickening when you think about it. Minnie has a blah team this year, 7 over .500 or so and yet they run away with the division. It should be the Sox doing that folks. Disgraceful. And the team next year on paper will be worse than this year's almost certainly. Ugh. It's so disappointing. Kenny and Hahn and Jerry should be so proud of their work.1 point

Getz is going to have to channel his inner Roland Hemond to get this fixed. That 1970 team had few good players, a terrible farm (a White Sox Standard) but he was somehow able to coax a starting pitcher and a starting position player from the Angels in return for a great defensive CF who couldn't hit plus a really bad infielder (Syd O'Brien). A couple more trades of modest talent struck gold (or at least silver) And then of course, Chuck Tanner said "hey, we should start Wilbur Wood." I don't think a rebuild like we did in 2016 has a chance in hell of succeeding. He's got to make some moves.1 point

1. Still has no concept of getting on base more as a priority for the worst team at it. 2. Where does he plan to get these more athletic players before next year? They have a handful of trade resources but not a lot, they have some money to spent, but they are already talking about their bullpen needs when they have about 0.75 starting pitchers out of 6. Presumably this would involve trading all their tolerable prospects considering they’d need like 15 players.1 point

Don't see many "open tryouts" beyond the catcher, second base and right field holes they had since the prior decade (save for McCann's time here). Sounds like a continuation plan of failure for bringing up players not ready and not developed by Chris Getz heading into this season (Colas, Gonzales, Sosa). Even if Jerry is willing to spend, which is doubtful with declining ticket sales for a third consecutive season, there aren't any good free agents willing to come here. As always, it will be relievers and old players signing their last contract with no other options (Dunn, La Roche, Keuchel, Grandal, Parrot, Lynn). Open Tryouts - 40 Man Roster Players under 2024 White Sox contract / control (ML Minimum - Arb 3) (Player & 2023 fWAR through 9/14) Position Players - 17 Under Control for 2024 Catchers: Carlos Perez -0.1 & Korey Lee -0.3 First Base: Andrew Vaughn 0.4 Second Base: Jose Rodriguez 0.0 vs. Lenyn Sosa -0.6 Third Base: Yoan Moncada 0.7 Shortstop: Tim Anderson -0.6 Left Field: Andrew Benintendi 0.2 Centerfield: Luis Robert 4.8 Rightfield: Oscar Colas -1.3 vs. Gavin Sheets -0.9 Designated Hitter: Eloy Jimenez 0.3 Infield Reserve: Zach Remillard 0.1 Outfield Reserve: Adam Haseley -0.2 vs. Trayce Thompson -0.3 vs. Jackson "Clint" Frasier -0.4 Reserve: Loser of one of the above "battles" Minor League Players: Bryan Ramos (AA 22 Years Old) Pitchers - 20 Under Control for 2024 Starters (6 - Threshold = 1 or more 2023 starts): Cease 3.0; Scholtens 0.4; Banks 0.0; Toussaint 0.0; Lambert -0.5; Kopech -0.9 Relievers (11): Santos 1.6; Bummer 0.7; Ramsey 0.3; Peralta 0.1; Patino 0.1; Padilla 0.0; Garcia 0.0; Navarro 0.0; Hendriks -0.1; Crochet -0.1; Cronin -0.2 Minor League Players (3 - Zero White Sox 2023 Appearances): Foster (29 - TJS); Martin (27 - AAA); Ramirez (29 - AAA). Note - Unrestricted (Chicago / Illinois Lockdowns) attendance in 2021 (late June - Year End) was higher / game than unrestricted 2022 season. 2023 is a decline from 2022, 2024 will likely be a decline from 2023 with the extinguishing of any hope after the Chris Getz / Pedro Grifol 2024 debacle.1 point

The fact that MLB did not deal with this promptly as is required by the text of the CBA is consistent with this. It very much seems like the league was hoping this would go away between last summer and January, and suddenly got serious and dealt with their requirements in a few weeks once the accuser came forward in the press. Which has absolutely made me wonder if there are other ones where the accuser did not go public that we never heard of around the league.1 point

He actually just came off the IL on July 29, pitched 5 scoreless innings. But even if he was hurt, the White Sox have actually done this exact thing before. In 2013, Rick Hahn traded Jesse Crain to the Rays for either a PTBNL or Cash Considerations when Crain had been hurt since June 29, with the return to be based on whether or not he actually came off the DL during the season. They could absolutely have done a similar setup with him if any team wanted him, the White Sox pick up some of the money since they're going to have to pay it anyway, and the return in terms of prospects (or a financial return) depending on what Clevinger actually does the rest of the year. https://www.espn.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/9519708/chicago-white-sox-trade-jesse-crain-tampa-bay-rays1 point
