Are we seriously having a conversation about bringing Abreu back?? Have you all lost your minds?? What would be the purpose of that? I know AV has sucked but have you watched him play recently, he is starting to figure it out and he's still young. You cannot bring in Abreu to take playing time from Vaugh, or any DH (Sheets, Lee, Eloy). If Abreu wants to be a coach then SURE........otherwise let's move on

When your owner is Jerry Reinsdorf, you need to fill 1B when it’s time to win. Draft the up the middle players who your owner will never pay for on the market. Taking Cags would be super annoying and I’d be very surprised if Chris Getz did that with his first pick ever.

I still don't trust Crochet's arm to hold up. I would definitely sell high on him while you can. He is quite a talent but he is entering very serious territory with innings on his arm. Already a Tommy John on his record too. His unorthodox delivery could be an issue too down the road.

AV is 4th among AL 1B in HR this season. The offensive stats of the position have really nosedived.

last time I was at a Sox game, I bought one of those cooler beers and did self checkout. cool concept, easy enough. I pay for it and crack it open and the employee starts yelling at me that it's his job to open my beer. what? no it's not. why would I want some stranger's unwashed hands opening my drink? that's ridiculous. I also think it's demeaning to the employee, what are you my servant? I can do it myself, buddy, thanks. I relayed this perspective to him and he didn't agree and I felt he was more belligerent than someone at their job should be. bad vibes at the Cell last year, the two other games I went to involved a fat fan shooting herself and drunk idiots heckling Dylan Cease through 5 innings.

If we're talking about bringing back cooked ex-1B, Konerko would put a few asses in the seats, and he'd hit a little better than Abreu right now.

In the last month Vaughn has an .893 OPS. We need to stick with him and see if he's finally turned the corner. Abreu can be a coach or sign a one day contract and retire a White Sox. Adding him to the roster would be complete malpractice.

Getz deserves proper credit for the signing of Fedde, it was a very solid move. Now, they need to get the proper value out of him. I understand there is a group here that enjoys watching him pitch, but let’s keep in mind he’s pitching well for a team that is 19-53. He’s also 31. His value to helping the Sox actually win will be in the form of a trade, not what he does on the mound for the Sox.

I half disagree. I think his floor is what he’s already done in the majors. He averages 31 doubles and 21 homers per 162, and he’s played every game but 15 since the beginning of 2023. He’s healthy, which is more than we can say for almost every other person on this team. I suppose 20 points higher on the OPS ticker was exaggerating his current resume a bit, but isn’t too off of what I think his ceiling is. I think he could be a .780-.800 OPS player but not better than that. He doesn’t walk enough and he doesn’t hit for average enough.

Go chase dreams some where other than this historically bad team. As a fan I hate them as players, as people I am sure they are decent enough.

Should we talk about his career RC+ of 102 as a 1B? How about his career .727 OPS? He's a mediocre bat and a below average 1B by pretty much any measure. He's also one who is in his arb years.

That's a ridiculous way for a GM and scouting department to operate. Their job is to bring in the best talent with the highest ceilings. Of course they want them to be up the middle players but if the best player available with the greatest chance to be a high impact player is a corner then you take that player and how the owner spends his money is about the furthest thing from the equation as possible.

Crochet doesn't walk anyone(shocker) He has a better K/BB than Sale in 2014.

Crochet looked good so far, but do you really value him more than Cease? Good 1/2 of good baseball can be a mirage.

Is career fWAR really the best metric to evaluate a 1b who has played a ton of RF and DH?

Andrew Vaughn has negative fWAR for his career. Nothing about him screams "high floor". A 750 OPS going forward would mean a replacement level player or .5 fWAR at best. I'm glad he's hot, but he needs to hit ALOT to matter. Not a 750 OPS, but like an 850 OPS. That would be a solid regular at 1B. Not only is he "just" a 1B, he's by many metrics a bottom 5 or even league worst defensive 1B. He has no range, he's 5-10 in cleats, and his reflexes are poor. He needs to hit, and hit a lot.

AV and Gavin have more value to us than what we could get back in trade right now. AV seems like he’s going to be a fairly solid high floor/low ceiling 20 homer, 30 double, .750 OPSish player. We have seen enough to know what he probably is over four years, and it’s ok, not great. He doesn’t seem to make adjustments, especially to offspeed pitches, Gavin is more of a wildcard, I feel like he could have better OPS and SLG potential if he is more aggressive early in the count. He takes way too many strikes early in the count. He could be better than AV, but he also could be far worse. His walk rate this year is very encouraging. I don’t want either to lose time to a Jose Abreu curtain call. We need them each to have as many ABs as possible so we can get a sense of which is the better starting player.

Seems like Jimmy and Harold are hearing conflicting things. I certainly would love to add legit left handed savagery more than anyone but I also understand the risk in using a Top 5 on a 1B. Like Vaughn, if it turns out that the bat isnt special, then you've no other value there and there is a ceiling on how much WAR you can get from a 1B. Should be interesting. Perhaps Getz should focus his energy on pulling Kjerstad from BAL so we can use the draft for other purposes rather than immediate needs.

In the last few years, teams in contention pulled off trades like this: 2021 - Brewers sent 2 relievers to Toronto for Rowdy Tellez (.605 OPS) 2022 - Mets sent bullpen arm to Pirates for Dan Vogelbach (.769 OPS) 2023 - Brewers sent minor league starter Justin Jarvis to Mets for Mark Canha (.725 OPS) 1B offense has cratered in the AL this year. Vaughn has 5-6 weeks to solidify himself as a .750 OPS hitter. Sheets has already done so. Until last week, the Red Sox were running Garrett Cooper out there at first. Houston is writing Jon Singleton into the lineup. Again, I'm sure you can make a point without sounding like a circus clown, no matter how silly your point is. All teams have scouts. They don't look up a player on B-R.com, then make a trade based on their stat line. If they feel Sheets' and Vaughn's adjustments are real and repeatable, both have value.

Trust me I'm at the forefront of it. You get DINK couples in their 20s making 350k a year that think absolutely nothing of tipping 30% on top of a 5 cup of coffee. I'm over it personally, I just stopped tipping on takeout. We have 21 dollars an hr min wage now, if you want to pay your employees more, just raise prices, I'm not going to be tipping for pouring 50 cents worth of bean juice into a cup.

At T-Mobile I was being flashed the reader with 15/20/25% on every purchase. I didn't tip, but I know a lot of people feel that pressure and will when the employee is right there in front of them. I would wonder if like most places only a fraction of that tip goes directly to the employee as well. T-Mobile vendor told me that get pooled and the vendor takes a cut as well.

personally I appreciate all the disparate perspectives on this board! I usually agree with caulfield though. Particularly good discussion when politics starts to seep into sport (like this thread) and you get some fun takes. It's a good message board. Go Sox.
