All else equal, I’d be hard pressed to take a HS prospect over one of the best college SS prospects in years. The latter provides a high ceiling without a ton of projection & development, which is what makes the pick so valuable in the first place.7 points

He wasn’t held back. None of these HS guys go to Low A in their draft year in most cases Nobody is getting full slot. That won’t be an issue. I think he’d have to tumble quite a bit to not be the pick.5 points

Can't stress enough how I hated not protecting him. Classic rule 5 pick profile. More importantly, a guy you invested millions of dollars and resources into and who mostly performed last year in a position of need and you let him go for nothing while having an empty 40 man roster. Makes 0 sense. Hopefully we get him back. I'd prefer him to our own rule 5 pick I would think but with the empty (and bad) roster, not like it's an either/or.5 points

They can turn their fortunes around by plugging Luis Robert into CF.5 points

This reads like the kind of careful answer you give when you need to pretend he's not already your guy5 points

that was the aforementioned Chili. Now that he's older though I'm sure the slang would adjust to what is now currently the great things in his life. BlAcKrOcH 401k or something4 points

Meidroth at 2nd, Roch at SS, Colson at 3B and Bonemer in LF? that feels like a group ready for 2027...which is why Roch should be picked over any 17/18 year old prep.4 points

If I’m a major leaguer, why not? Better than living in a place like Cleveland.4 points

Yeah, Getz wasn't qualified to get the job, and he works for one of the worst owners in sports. He's done some good things with the limitations he has. I don't think anyone else hired would be doing a dramatically better job, considering there's next to no money dolled out. Someone with experience may have been better at trades for sure. But as you mentioned, Getz has surrounded himself with better people. I don't think he'll be the GM when Ishbia takes over unless he really does some magical things over the next few years.4 points

As someone who left NJ for eastern NC, I hated ever going into the city. I prefer my 1.3 acres, inground pool, 3000 SF house, 1000 SF woodshop and only the sound of animals at night on my outdoor patio while I drink my bourbon, smoke my cigar and watch the sox blow the game in the 9th while I cuss JR with nobody to hear me but the coyotes and deer. All for a fraction of the cost of Manhattan. But it's really personal preference. Glad you enjoy it.3 points

Is Cowles really any different than Capra? Derek Hill? Mead? these guys, and others are all waiver-wire replaceable. Palette may not be the Sox cup of tea - fine. But they had plenty of room to protect him. On a side note, Mead has no power, does not walk, has a high K rate; is a poor defender and has no speed. What is a good/developed/top prospec version of Mead supposed to be able to do?3 points

Just be happy with your new lefty ace and move on, Boston3 points

You also have better roster flexibility with someone like Palette who would have options and could move up & down. I just don’t get the logic here.3 points

You're forgetting Carlson, perhaps the best defensive shortstop in the bunch. Nice problems to have for once.3 points

You are literally setting an arbitrary $15M signing threshold because Getz signed a player to that amount two years ago when we were cutting payroll. I think it’s very possible they will sign someone over $20M. I don’t see them going beyond two years to ensure they have as much flexibility heading into the 2028 offseason. But I do think they are making a run at O’Hearn as a short term stopgap at 1B and I’d wager that will cost something around 2/$26M. I think they have serious interest in Fairbanks and that will very likely cost more than $15M over two years. Whether they can actually convince two dudes in their 30’s to sign with a 60 win team is a different matter. I’m not going to guarantee that because most guys will prefer a contender, but I refuse to believe 15M is some insurmountable figure like you are doing in every thread. Let’s flip the script, what happens if they sign someone over $15M? Are you willing to sit out the rest off-season if Getz proves you wrong?2 points

Real Estate in Manhattan is super expensive for a reason. I am fortunate enough to live there now. Pretty great honestly.2 points

most teams have s%*# players somewhere on the 26 and 40 man. But bad teams like the sox have been don't have any stars and lack even average regulars. I'm not going to get that upset about back end s%*#, at least as someone noted they seem to be churning through them faster. that said, find some fucking good players.2 points

Plus its not a fair comparison.Getz has only been GM for 2 full seasons. There's been plenty of talent brought in since then and its just in the baby steps stage of making youth development a priority. And Montgomery is a prime example of benefitting from a Getz hire . Shane Smith and Vasil both now key components of the pitching staff also were part of scouting wins in a situation that has not been a fountain of success for very many teams. I don't know why people keep feeding the despair wolf.2 points

From what I've read he's consensus but things can change quickly based on the new data that will come from the college and prep seasons. The good thing is that all three of the SS at the top right now are worthy of 1,1 in a weaker draft -- and Roch at the top right now makes it a strong one with them behind. Plus, I'd always prefer to take a position player 1,1 given injury and that downside risk.2 points

That was a similar concern with Vaughn coming out of CAL...difficulties with front line starters and facing elite NCAA velocity over 93 up in the zone. At least he seems to be a much better breaking ball hitter than Andrew or Luis Robert.2 points

Mead, Cowles, Hudson, Hill et al and you don't protect Palette? Palette was a 2nd rounder only 3 years ago.2 points

Emerson is a lefty too, correct? I feel like I almost lean that way, all things equal.2 points

Some people build through the draft. Other teams build through free agency and trades. The White Sox build through the Rule 5 draft; where you're 41'st man becomes our best man.2 points

Alexander Alberto and Alexander Albertus?! Are they acquiring players alphabetically.2 points

There is still some fat on the 40 man roster that can be trimmed. I just struggle seeing how we can carry two Rule 5 guys in our bullpen next year with some of the other pitchers in place (including Gilbert with no options). That being said, maybe you bring both into camp, get a good look at them, and then proceed for with one of them on the major league team.2 points
-
A Rule 5 selection doesn't just get offered back to his original team. He has to go through waivers, first. That's how the Sox got Vasil.2 points

I will say it’s better that it’s the Guardians who plan to compete next year than a true rebuilding team who could more easily absorb a lack of production.2 points

I’m not going to lose sleep over losing Pallette, but not protecting him didn’t make any sense to me. It’s not like they have so much talent that there’s a roster crunch. Whatever.2 points

Unless there's some horrible injury or major underperformance next college season, there's no way this guy isn't going #1 right? Like, there's no way that the White Sox don't get cute here and mess this up?2 points

Caulfield - I have always been a supporter of you, but like what in the f*** man. Now you are throwing out made up deal terms from Jim fucking Bowden as if they are the real thing unless you read the linked article. You aren’t going to make it in the future world of endless AI slop articles because you have no filter and never edit your posts to clearly articulate what is fact, what is the opinion of the author, and what are your own thoughts.2 points

JFC…as has been said multiple times, the Rays declined a 1/$11M option and could find no one to take on that salary. But yup, he’s now going to get 3/$43M because fucking Spotrac says so.2 points

Sir, you coined Drain Duo for Lavine and Lauri. Surely you can gift us something for Colson/Roch/Carlson/Bonemer2 points

I've been trying to get him to come up with a new nickname or even ACKNOWLEDGE his past as the undisputed king of nicknames on soxtalk. He refuses to even respond to me when I bring up his past as the defacto nicknamer. Its really a shame. He's running from who he is. I think we need to ratchet up the pressure and threaten to ban him unless he gives an honest effort at giving Roch a nickname.2 points

Roch went from good player to great player in a few sentences. Shirley has to be giddy.2 points

Getz should get drunk tonight and sign an outfielder.2 points

While getting Roch is nice, it’s as much about getting the extra $2mill or so for the rest of the draft. I may be off but, whatever the delta. Nice to have.2 points
