  1. Nothing personal, but I would hate this trade. Tauchman may be a decent player, but the jury is still out on him and Statcast believes he overachieved last year. Plus he’s almost 29. And to get him and a guy who is redundant with Collins, we have to weaken the pitching staff, waste some of our financial flexibility, and improve the chances of the Yankees getting Cole. Just doesn’t make any sense to me.

  2. I'm going to have to agree with Balta here, The one advantage that everyone seems to overlook is OBP prospects have a much better chance to become highly valuable pieces going forward due to that plate discipline. Not only does it produce a lot of walks but you can become a much better hitter once you figure out how to use that great eye on hitting pitches in the zone like Moncada did. You want more examples ? Ok Look at Semien and Narvaez both have far surpassed any projections of them because they used their great plate discipline to learn to hit pitches in the zone. That doesn't mean Collins will become great. But it does mean if he does start to use that batting eye to become a better hitter like Moncada,Semien and Narvaez he will be so much better than an undisciplined hitter such as Avi who has all kinds of talent but never was very good at plate discipline. If he was he could've been a superstar. Once the hit tool catches up to the plate discipline we are looking at All Star level production. Of course that's what also makes Grandal an All-Star I'd love to have Grandal on the same team as Collins because along with Moncada there are 2 guys Collins can probably learn a lot from about using that great eyes to become much better as a hitter. No need for a DH then between Abreu, Grandal Collins McCann Eloy . Sox learn a lesson from past mistakes. Keep high OBP prospects , Draft more of them.

  3. Omar Vizquel was definitely more concerned with advancing in the profession than doing anything on the Player Development side for the Sox. He now gets the chance to that elsewhere.

  5. I've seen Ricky Renteria work as a manager, and that makes me a lot more upset.

  6. I am okay with this, hopefully this is a progressive move. We need more Jirschele types in this org.

  7. Hope Collins gets a full time shot, love the OBP. Also, maybe try him in RF. If he can hit and get on base maybe plug him in at the #2 with Madrigal leading off. This team is looking funner by the minute!

  8. And give up a solid SP and bullpen arm, both with considerable upside, and both cheap and controllable. Gross.

  9. Tie Tauchman to Happ and Yanks eat $3M and maybe throw in Bird. We send Lopez and Fry. We solve for LH RF who can play defense and mash plus 4-5 starter plus LH bat off bench or DH (Bird might not be ready to take field at 1B but if he is, he's great flexibility/depth).

  10. Great post. I definitely agree. I’d really like to give Collins as many at bats as possible next year.

  11. I'm not sure about that. As a switch hitter Grandal is best against lefties. As a righty McCann is best against lefties. The majority of pitchers are righties which is who we will be seeing Collins against, SO against a LH should see either Grandal or McCann catching with the other at DH Grandal is better against righties than McCann and is a better pitch framer so Grandal would probably get the bulk of the starts at catcher but that leaves Collins to catch perhaps once a week while Grandal DH's. McCann would be on the bench against righties. I guess I'm making it sound like McCann would get the least amount of playing time but I'm sure he would also catch once in a while against righties, but ideally I'd want Grandal and Collins getting most of those AB's switching DH and catcher duties every so often with a bit of 1st base sprinkled in for both when you might want to rest Abreu against a tough righty. It should also be noted that according to what I've been reading Giolito and Lopez were among the pitchers hurt the most by bad framing which is on McCann and Castillo. I don't know how Collins is viewed as a framer yet but McCann and Castillo were pretty bad. Narvaez and Phegley were both listed higher than McCann and Castillo was near the bottom. Between McCann and Castillo we basically had some of the worst pitch framing in the league. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/catcher_framing

  12. Omar Vizquel spent two seasons in the White Sox farm, managing Winston-Salem and Birmingham. I detail the decision to move on from the 52-year-old HERE.

  13. I think that would get him. Corbin got $23 and Eovaldi got $17. I think Wheeler at $20 is a good number.

  14. Yeah, if he's in a lower range than that, there's reason for him to think a better offer will show up. If he gets to that level, that might be the "Take it and be done with it" level.

  15. They really need to just pay him. If we get stuck with Keuchel I'll be fucking pissed.

  16. Jirschele is the one with a rocket strapped to his back. If he wasnt about 15 he'd be even higher in the org

  17. I'm not sure why you think theres no doubt. Yermin has 107 games between AA and AAA in his career - his wRC is 147; avg age of 25.9. Collins has played 222 games between AA and AAA with a wRC+ of 135. - avg age of 23.5. Last year Collins played 30 more games and had a 140 wRC+ being 2 years younger than Yermin who had a 150 wRC in fewer games. They are actually very comparable.

  18. Sanchez is getting non-tendered. Palka goes as soon as we add an OF / DH. It’s very possible that they outright Zavala now if we were to able to land Grandal. Any other future spots will come from four the pitchers you named above. It’s pretty cut & dry to be honest.

  19. Mercedes and Collins have pretty comparable wRC+ in AA and AAA. Collins has quite a few more PA as well, so SS is quite a bit larger.

  20. Roster expansion definitely changes the calculus, but its awfully tough to carry a DH only bat on your MLB roster for the entire season. But yah, he's on the 40 man now, so its a moot point.

  21. I would think so. I think the trimming will be from the Palka, Zavala, Vieira, Medeiros, Fulmer and Covey group as opposed to anyone just added.

  22. Alec Hansen definitely most notable omission. Other guys that have a shot a playing the big leagues, though certainly not impact talents, would be Forbes, Kubat, Puckett and Thompson. Only guy I could see maybe taken in R5 draft out of this group is Thompson.

  23. I was thinking as well he might get a job with the Sox major league staff, but who knows, maybe he isn't a wiz as an instructor. I really don't think this is a very big deal.

  24. I’m more upset that he won’t be working with Anderson on his defense. Having Vizquel as a mentor would’ve been great for TA7 so of course it didn’t happen.

  27. Being historically good at something <> being good at teaching something. It more often means the exact opposite. Fun Fact: Ron Washington had the same exact same career fielding percentage at shortstop as Tim Anderson

  28. I could care less if the was the heir apparent. We have major leaguers who cant catch a baseball. He should of been up here working with them ala Ron Washington. Whomever is working with Tim Anderson needs to be shown the door.

  30. It frightens me how much power and voice Chris Getz has. Don't know if he's any good at what he does, but I'm skeptical of everything White Sox front office these days.

  33. I'd be furious, too. The pressure's on as far as I'm concerned. This is the first offseason where there's truly no excuse not to sign premium free agents: we have clear needs, there are elite players available to fill them, we have a surplus of payroll room, and we're coming into our supposed contention window. If we don't get it done and other clubs do it's just a clear concession we're not serious. (Last offseason was damn close to "no excuse" as well, but I guess they could say it was a year or two early, and they also just got "surprised" on Machado, who they thought they had in hand. )

  34. You can. Just have them serve at different times. And players brought in this off-season or who were in minors wouldn't be suspended.

  35. If this were to be the WhiteSox offseason plan I would be pissed. They could sign Grandal, Wheeler, Rendon, Kuechel, Betances and trade for Starling Marte/Joc/Nimmo/Mancini and barely squeak by in the top 10 for payroll. Rick, Kenny, and mainly Jerry need to really have a stellar offseason especially after last year’s debacle otherwise, and I can only speak for myself, I lose all faith in them ever building a winner.

  36. I love the Sox so much it sucks sometimes. I have faith in Hahn, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been awful at his job overall. I just hope he's learned from past mistakes and will continue to get better. That includes convincing Kenny and JR to spend money.

  37. Why wouldn't someone take Mercedes and see if he can hit? He hit everywhere in the minors. Nothing to lose. The Sox took a catcher with far weaker credentials than him a couple of years ago. For that matter, why haven't the Sox? Guys like Rutherford are also stashable - now he'd be a pure stash and no-play, but a reasonable move for someone like Detroit. Madeiros is the one that has no chance of anyone taking him. He has a low ceiling and he's pitched poorly. Less than 24 hours left. I guess they can always dump players after Wednesday - just not add. I still love my fringe prospects....just not the ones they seem intent on protecting.

  39. I could see a warm bodies offseason of something like Calhoun, Encarncaion, Wacha and Wood. The team's payroll would still be over $90M in that scenario. To be clear, I am not in the slightest bit advocating for anything resembling that offseason - it would be truly disgusting - but there is no way the Sox aren't spending $40M+ in new AAV on FA/trades this winter.

  40. No one cares what a single baseball writer thinks a players destination will be. MLBTraderumors does predictions every off-season; based on feedback and things they're hearing and etc. They get about 4-6 out of the top 50 right every off-season. No one has any idea where anyone is signing or going.

  41. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe released a book recently on the Red Sox called Homegrown. Detailing the end of Theo through the DD era. Lots of info on Moncada/Kopech in there and an entire chapter dedicated to the Sale trade. Hahn was asking for Benintendi ++ at the deadline. The week of the meetings, Hahn called and said they'd probably be trading Sale. He asked for Moncada. Then he called back the next day I believe the day for the meetings and asked for Kopech. They were in discussions with other teams too. Hahn pushed for Devers as 3rd piece. Dombrowski wouldn't do it because he knew nobody could offer Moncada/Kopech as headliners. When Hahn called back the night before the trade and asked for Basabe/Diaz, DD agreed basically instantly.

  42. All right Brian and Greg time to get it on. Rice and Marist over hauled their programs this year and are playing their best ball at the right time. I think they both met teams that are just deeper this week. I think Loyola was a tad over rated this year and both Rice and Marist got great draws. Warren and LWE will be a good one but if Marist and Rice pull it off, Greg you need to Uber to Reilly's Daughter as that will be the epicenter of something. MC and Rita should both be downstate as well. Rita in 5A is something as they should be much higher as they have zero kids playing both ways and every team they play has many. Would love to see them play MC or Naz.

  43. There's a reason not to expect the worst when it comes to free agency with this organization? This organization has failed hard in free agency almost every year (on that same note, so have the Bulls).
