He's a gold glove caliber utility infielder who fits well into the clubhouse, doesn't cost anything, and provides valuable insurance to multiple positions. Especially with what we've seen from Moncada struggling with his health, and Leury on the IL. Yolmer can step in and play absolutely great defense. I'll take that guy as a bench piece any day. It's a season were people are and will continue to drop like flies. When someone needs to be brought in from outside for insurance, there's nothing wrong with going with a familiar face. 2. We started with Moncada, Anderson, and Leury. All three have missed time. Next in line were Danny Mendick, Nick Madrigal, Chestlor Cuthbert, and Ryan Goins. Madrigal has missed time due to injury. Mendick is playing every day due to Madrigal and Garcia missing time currently. Goins and Cuthbert suck. 2- In 2020 we are seeing a much higher than normal injury rate across MLB. You need more depth than ever, meaning there is no such thing as too many of these types of players right now. We have already used 7 different IFs. Yolmer would make #8 if he makes it here. 3- A lot of this has depending on health and injuries. There really hasn't been a time this year where the roster has allowed the Sox to run an infield out there with sub-par players on anything other than a single game basis. He was elite at 2nd base defensively when he was younger with the Jays. Agree though that he's not better than Yolmer at the role anymore.
