Sox werent going to tender him a deal but he wouldnt accept it and said he would come back better and they were so moved by his plea they gave him a deal. He's filled in pretty admirably considering all that. Given the Sox influx of young positional players coming, I would imagine he's traded in July if a playoff team likes him. He'd be a good 24/25th guy with defensive versatility, great speed and a decent bat.5 points

All of this Vaughn/Abrams talk will be moot when Adley falls to the White Sox.4 points

There's some luck and some skill involved. The ratio of each is what is worth debating. That said, there's no reason for any MLB team to not maximize their investment in player development. It costs less than players themselves, and the returns on investment typically are massive.4 points

In his last 12 he's hitting .333 (17/51), .397 OB%, .510 Slugg %, 8 R, 4 RBI, 5 BB, 1HBP, 1 K, 2 HR, 3 2B, 7 SB 1 CS.4 points

It's June and there's still playoff pipe dreams to be had. That's fun. Proud of the way we've played recently, minus the Minnesota series. Which I think was simply a matter of running into a scorching hot club that was firing on all cylinders. It would be really cool if we could go on some kind of run here.3 points

Get to .500. Call up some kids, trade for Stroman, and let's make some noise boys. It's heading into June, and we are 2 games back of the Wild Card. At least its still fun.2 points

I was wanting this year to be fun and competitive with growth from the young guys with one last top 10 pick for the rebuild. It's looking like it could be that way. Anderson is playing really well, Jimenez is probably worse than we all thought but the homers he's hit have been impressive + his eye is improving, Moncada's ops is over .800 and Giolito looks really good. The Giants finished 2018 with 73 wins and have the 10th pick in the draft in 2019. The Sox are going to end up winning 77-78 games, imo, and that will net them a top 15 pick, which wasn't what I hoped for but with the 4 players I mentioned playing/pitching well, I'll gladly substitute their performances for the higher pick. Hopefully when Cease comes up, he also impresses and they can get to 82 wins.2 points

Standard normalization of college stats based on key rates - similarly to what ZIPS would do. The article actually discusses how Vaughn has been a nightmare for analytics people because he falls outside of the SD for every college hitter in the system... so when you project his outcomes by using a standard college/mlb statistical regression you get the numbers above... (I'm sure they vary based on analysis) and if you heavily weight BB% (which in Vaughns case you should because he's so high on the spectrum that his college walk numbers actually do help us project his MLB outcomes) You actually bump those numbers up to: 254/378/514 Most people working the analytical baseball world will have a hard time accepting that slash line for someone who has never left college. Hence why teams are searching for reasons to discredit the number and opposed to accepting it. Vaughn is a fucking animal.2 points

Solid defender, super high BABIP. He's decent, and yes, part of his high WAR is due to the CF positional adjustment. Once his BABIP lowers, his numbers will look more normal. He also might hit a few more home runs while that happens. He's a FA after 2020, so I wouldn't mind trading him and running with an Eloy/Cordell/Tilson OF full time, with Palka off the bench and Robert in the wings2 points

Filling a need at 1st base is the absolute last concern I have with how to use the number 3 pick in the draft. I'm fine with drafting Vaughn but not because there may be a whole at the absolute easiest position in baseball to fill.2 points

I think we’re in the dreaded “TJ Surgery & Achilles Recovery Stage.” So yes, I think that is typically stage 2b2 points

Hard to understand why Ricky can't sit him for a day or two. His contract even makes it desirable. Lots of players get to sit and try to figure it out from a view on the bench.2 points

A re-post from Y2Jimmy0: FutureSox Night will be Saturday June 15th vs the New York Yankees. Tickets are like $62 plus tax for a bleacher seat and pregame patio party from 4:40-6:40. It includes unlimited food and beer during that two hour period. It was a good time last year but we are hoping to get like 100 people since it's on a Saturday this year. Come out and join us! Here's the link: http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2019/03/2nd-annual-futuresox-night-at-guaranteed-rate-field/ **Update - The link works! Get your tickets before they're gone.1 point

So, we're 26-29 as we round out May and only 2.5 GB of the 2nd AL wild card spot. Mostly thanks to Boston's World Series hangover to this point. After sweeping Kansas City, we continue along a somewhat cozy stretch on our schedule. We'll host Cleveland (28-27) for 4 games in Chicago. We will then head to Washington (24-32) for 2 games. Before going to Kansas City (18-37) for a three game series before we come back home to host Washington and see the Nationals for 2 more. That's an 11 game stretch that we could seemingly take advantage of. 7-4 would get us back to .500 at 33-33. What say you? I think if we can just manage a split with Cleveland, we'll get it done. The problem being that Banuelos, Covey and Nova will start the first three games of the series. Giolito throws the fourth... so... that's the one you expect to win (still feels weird saying stuff like that). So, we'll need to find a way to beat Carrasco, Bauer or Rodriguez with at least one of our three guys. Which, to say the least, is not an inspiring prospect. I have no faith that any of those guys do anything besides blow up the game before it even gets going. It really makes you wonder where this team would be, not only if they had a healthy Rodon/Kopech, but just if they didn't have a giant black hole enveloping the #3 to #5 spots in the rotation. It's tough to watch those games a lot of the time.1 point

There were 25 guys that hit 30 HRS last season. Obviously fewer than 1 per team. There were only 4 that did it while hitting .300 or higher; JD, Trout, Yelich and Betts. If the Sox think he is a 30/300 guy, it would be insane to pass on that.1 point

I really think people are glossing over the first base issue. There seems to be a general feeling that the Sox will simply sign a CJ Cron or Derek Dietrich or someone off the scrap heap and he will suddenly rake, or that Jose Abreu won't continue to decline, or that this will be an easy position for the Sox to fill. I'm not confident at all that the Sox would be successful in signing JD Martinez or any other player viewed as a quality first basemen, or trade for a good one. Vaughn could certainly bust or disappoint, but people a lot smarter than me think he has a good shot of being an above average bat at first base, as soon as late next year or early 2021. I think passing on Vaughn in part because it's assumed that the Sox will have no problem getting production from first base down the line would be a mistake.1 point

Nope. Not affiliated. Just the opinion of one writer. Have you looked at prospect lists though? Some of the OF's aren't doing well currently but it's one of the strengths of the system. Eloy, Robert, Gonzalez, Basabe, Adolfo, Rutherford, Steele Walker, etc. They have lots of guys. That's all it means.1 point

There is nothing "dumb" about fans wanting to see good baseball and caring about winning games. When you explain how other people only think about the little "micro" unimportant things...makes you sound like a pompous A**.1 point

Signing Gio Gonzalez for a mere $2 million a year (like the Brewers did) would have improved the starting rotation. He certainly is a better starter than Banuelos.1 point

I like McCann a lot and would definitely like to keep him around. But extending him seems unnecessary. Sox control him next year thru arb and he'll probably get like $4.5-5M. Unless he wants to sign like a 3-4 year deal at $3M AAV, I don't see the point.1 point
-
The best reason to believe that McCann's offensive performance is not a fluke, is that he has made some very wise adjustments, which are, not surprisingly, producing good results. His taking fast balls up the middle, or the opposite way, and pulling the off speed pitches, together with his practice of choking up on the bat, with 2 strikes, are fundamentally sound approaches. Again, he is not going to hit .340, but I think he will be a productive hitter. That, coupled with his defence, make him a very appealing option, to be the catcher, going forward. Well, I guess I've said all that before, but it bears repeating, for those who insist that it's too early to believe that he is anything more than the scrub, who played for the Tigers. I want to extend him, because I want him to be the primary backstop, for this rebuild. That is, of course, unless Rutschman miraculously falls to us, in the Draft. If we wait, until he reaches free agency, at the end of next year, this front office may balk at paying him, what the market commands. It wouldn't hurt to have him be Collin's mentor, either. Collins has a lot to learn, to become a good Major League catcher. The Sox have a very young pitching staff, and will need a good, smart catcher, to help them realize their potential.1 point

Right now, we just have to hope for a return to 2018 form and that alone would make him a quality #5 starter. Not the ideal outcome for him, but it enough for us if we add a TOR starter to pair with the three guys you mentioned.1 point
-
When the guys in front of you are Cease, Kopech & Giolito...you could be a pretty good pitcher and be a # 4 or 5 starter.1 point
