I’m not worried about Gonzalez defensively My point was that it’s premature to write off shortstop. I’ve seen many on this board mention it as well as podcasts etc. He’s playing shortstop. He might end up at 3B eventually but I’d be stunned if he’s not a shortstop to start.4 points

I hate to break it to you, but intentional tanking or not, this team is going to be brutally bad in 2024, with or without Cease. Given that JR won’t spend his way out of this mess, and the farm is a barren wasteland, what alternative is there? Doing nothing or adding a few washed up stopgaps in the name of “not tanking” is hardly a sound fix for this mess.3 points

I've heard it in lots of places that Montgomery ends up at 3B over past few days. He might ultimately but he'll be a big league shortstop to start his career.3 points

I prefer not to have a full-time DH. If you have someone like Robert who maybe needs a couple days not in the field you can keep his bat in the lineup. Or the other guys. Keeps everybody more fresh.3 points

Baltimore and Miami. Next question.2 points

I mean this is obvious stuff and he’s acting like it’s some top secret info.2 points

Not only that, Glasnow is owed more in 24 than Cease will make in 24 and 25 combined. Perhaps by as much as like $5M.2 points

Terrible comp as Cease has an extra year, and he also didn’t have the health issues those two had last year2 points

I loved that team, naturally Nellie was my all time favorite, attended game 2 of the World Series which was a heartbreaking loss to the Dodgers.2 points

Wow. Thanks. lots of great thrills from that team. I was in high school. Aparicio was an all-time favorite of mine. I just hated the day they traded him to Baltimore.2 points

Would you look at that, knowledgeable baseball insider says Cease has great value in the market. Could've sworn the internet said otherwise...weird.2 points

lol, what a fucking dumpster dive. Why wouldn't have you just give literally any internal option 600 PA and see what happens?2 points

Maybe the top power, but Adam Haseley was placed above him (and picked above him). Same for Pavin Smith. And Keston Hiura. McKay was a two-way player, but same deal. Like, Burger was very much not the #1 bat in that draft and got mocked well below where the Sox took him. There's no need to rewrite history because he had a great 2023 and the Sox traded him.2 points
-
I probably would have non-tendered before that deadline or DFA'd him today over Haseley personally.2 points

If you're going to discredit any season Eloy has an injury or surgery, you will never be able to fairly judge him lol2 points

Scouting Report: Busch is a polished, well-rounded offensive performer. He has a calm, controlled presence in the batter’s box and maintains elite strike-zone discipline. He recognizes pitches early and barrels both high-end velocity and quality secondary stuff with a balanced, powerful lefthanded stroke. He drives balls hard in the air from foul pole to foul pole and is a true all-fields hitter who can take what the pitcher gives him. He can be overly passive at times, but he has improved his approach to jump on hittable pitches and get the most from his natural strength, hand-eye coordination and plate discipline. He projects to be an at least above-average hitter who draws lots of walks and gets to his plus power in games. The Dodgers drafted Busch as a first baseman and attempted to turn him into a second baseman, but his lack of range makes him a liability without the help of a shift. He’s a below-average runner who lacks quickness and agility and is a below-average defender at the keystone. He began playing third base in 2023 and started most of his games there in Triple-A and the majors. He shows a good feel for body positioning and reading angles at the hot corner but is still a below-average defender learning the nuances of the position. Busch has also seen time in left field, but his best position remains first base. He has below-average arm strength. The Future: Busch projects to be a middle-of-the-order force who gets on base and hits for power, but he is blocked at first base by Freddie Freeman and has to find a position to break into the Dodgers’ lineup. The Dodgers received multiple offers for Busch at the trade deadline but held onto him because of his offensive potential. He will try to improve his defense at third base enough to be the eventual successor to Max Muncy.\\ hit 55 power 60. 40 fielder on the dodgers...feels like he'd be a 20 here. We'd trade him in 2 years and replace him with Isaiah Kiner-Falefa.2 points

I am really not a fan of the profile at the top of the class. The writeup on Konnor Griffin is more my style though. Exciting sounding player. Sign me up.2 points

They have alot of older minor leaguers, minus the catchers. They wouldn't be my preferred trade partner.2 points

some notes from the dodgers prospect chat at BA https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/los-angeles-dodgers-2024-mlb-prospects-chat/ (note I did not ask that question, the person's name was "me")2 points

Seems so light, not to mention trading our two biggest assets for players who only play 60% of the time. Pass2 points

IDK where else to put this. I just looked at Whitesox.com's depth chart and it lists Kopech as a bullpen piece. I find that interesting.1 point

Or you could think that none of the QBs in this draft are special. I'm not a Fields fan, he's unclutch and fumbles too much, but I don't think any of the QBs are any better than Fields. I think Fields has a floor of average and he might not get any better than that, but you have to admit he's had two absolute dipshits calling plays for him and still has shown growth. I don't think he's the guy either, but if they start over you're probably gonna get Zach Wilson and that's worse.1 point

I'm going with $115 mil max. subtract Cease's ~$10mil (can you retain the salary if he's traded before arbitration hearings? I don't think so), add about $2mil in pre-arb contracts from that deal, puts the projected payroll at about ~$110m. I tend to think we'll roll with Perez/Lee at catcher and that there's enough infield depth to avoid re-signing Elvis or a similar player. I don't see any point in spending on pitching, there are 13+ guys who are at least AAAA quality without Cease, unless you really want to spend 8 or 9 mil on a guy like Hyun-Jin Ryu or Carrasco. I wouldn't. Could possibly add someone in the Rule 5 draft too. Probably just need some outfield depth. Haseley was DFA'd today to add DeJong, could see Remillard being DFA'd for that purpose. But who to add? I wouldn't mind adding Kiermaier as a super-sub or to even start in RF but that seems very unlikely. Who else is really available? Someone of Trayce Thompson's caliber at $1-5mil. Or add someone in the Rule 5 draft. I bet they'd really love to get under $100mil. But will any team be willing to take on the majority of Moncada's salary?1 point

Here's the flip side of the Dodgers/White Sox trade... I have more faith in the Tigers GM than Chris Getz. If he had a package he liked for ERod, I'd try to get some of those players, plus an over the top one for Cease's value. Emmett Sheehan, Busch, Vargas would be in the ballpark for me, personally.1 point

I find it wild you could be so confident about this. If anything, I think the anti- position should just be there is too much uncertainty on who a good QB will be, and this team is in a position to build a strong team first with this years strong oline + WR + CB classes. You have no idea if the top of the class of Williams or Maye will be great, or if the best Qb will end up being someone like Jayden Daniels/Nix/Penix etc. We had no idea the 2020 QB class was that epic. No idea 2021 would be that poor. No idea that CJ Stroud would be one of the immediate impact QBs. You just don't know, but it kills your team if you don't play, can kill it if you do play, or can set launch you up a class for a decade. I do wonder if all the QB injuries this year have fooled people into thinking they can compete without QBs like the Steelers/Browns/etc are doing.1 point

Dude has 9 lives. He wasn't ever even fun bad like Palka yet he's gotten so many opportunities to prove he sucks. And somehow he still has a roster spot.1 point
-
For reference, Cartaya declined to 9th on the Dodgers top prospects from BA. Clearly people are starting to think his offense will not come around. He does get high marks as someone that can handle pitchers. Honestly some package of Busch, Cartaya, Ryan reminds me of the STL goldschmidt deal, and not sure that's a compliment.1 point

They can’t draft a new qb and keep Flus. I suppose you could punt on the qb, replace Getsy and draft Marvin Harrison after a trade down from #1 and give Flus one more year. Flus isn’t trash but he isn’t great either. I commend the team plays hard despite all the losses, but Poles had to talk to him about not using Sweat (and my guess is also for them to use Moore more). That isn’t a good sign in my mind.1 point
-
They did win the turnover and time of possession battle. Had they lost - it would have been a 3rd game where they outplayed the competition materially and lost. Flus is gone at end of the year, but had they not had two epic choke jobs, they would be 6-3 in their last 9 games and trending up. Defense is certainly trending up. Sweat addition looks a hell of a lot better thus far than Claypool.1 point

He's definitely a guy that was only going to go to a team really serious about winning a World Series. Big move by the Tigers. I'm certain they are cheering this signing all over Michigan.1 point
