Just got off the phone with a good friend of his. Don died of a heart attack. His friend said he lived life to the end still with a beer in his hand and a chew in his mouth. His friend had known him literally since they were kids.
  2. The opener pays off after all
  3. Start fining them for blowing the challenges
  4. One more time. I’m glad the Red Sox care at least a little.
  5. The disdain for Will Venable from many posters on this site and elsewhere baffles me. Here's a guy who inherited a team that lost a record 121 games and has his team in the playoffs only two years later (after the team improved by 19 games in 2025). The team's only All-Star last year, who he was relying on as his No. 1 starter, is languishing in the minors. He has only truly reliable starter; is starting numerous rookies and wasn't really well-served by his GM during the trade deadline this year. He's Ivy League-educated, super-articulate with the media; a standup-guy who never throws any of his players under the bus; and he is apparently great in the clubhouse. He the hands-down Manager of the Year, if you ask me.

After he was fired in 2020 as far as I know the White Sox did nothing to honor him. Thats not right and now its too late. Don Cooper was with the org for more than 3 decades.

rip. he lived a high stress life. us guys in middle age and older owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to try and look after our health, mentally and physically.

RIP Coop. He really was one of the most prominent coaches in White Sox history. He somehow got a Cy Young worthy year out of Esteban Loaiza and helped orchestrate one of the greatest pitching staffs of all time in 2005. I still remember him hanging up on the Score in 2011. What a guy. I think he was still doing radio appearances in the past few years too, this really came out of nowhere.

    Only 70 years old. 😢
  10. I agree, they wouldn't be on short rest tomorrow and Friday either since we had a day off Monday. Then Saturday you do a bullpen game or hope Sandlin can handle the Rockies. Sunday can be Kay if needed/all hands on deck OR Cleveland can actually lose some games, we clinch the division Saturday and then who the hell cares who pitches Sunday. That way Burke and Martin are either on full rest for games 1 and 2 of the wild card series or we win the division and line them up well rested for the division series.
  11. I just realized that if we end up the last Wild Card we're going to be playing all 3 games in Houston or Texas. That is... not ideal. Division or bust!
  12. Will has completely blown this game
  13. He is 1-3 with a BB and 2 RBI, come on
  14. Could you imagine how much better this offense would be if Grichuk were in the lineup and Colson wasn’t? Just move Chase to Ss, put Ant at second and Grichuk in LF!
  15. Nah…let’s get a double digit lead again and close it out with Richards and Castillo then watch multiple heads explode on Soxtalk.
  16. Again, I am not convinced that Will's in game management is nearly as bad as many think. He's got a terrible pitching staff. Like one of the worst in the game. He's also got about half of a roster that completely forgot how to hit a baseball at once. It's hard to look like you know what you are doing when no matter who you send out there, they are going to be bad. This squad is on life support.

I know Newcomb has been bad a couple times in a row, but to throw him in with those other three is crazy. He has really had a very good year, very good. I think his arm, hopefully only for now, is falling off from overuse. I hope he can recover and be outstanding again. In fact, about a month ago Schriffen and Stoney were discussing who is the Sox’s 2nd MVP after Vargas. Right away Schriffen went with Peters (who was back to being hot at the plate), and Peters was my choice too. But Stoney said he would go with Newcomb because he has come in for shorts stits and long 3-inning outings and he has been really good and dependable whenever/ however used. And as I thought about it, Stoney convinced me he was correct. Now I know Newcomb’s had, I think, two clunkers in a row, but come on people; our memories have to last longer than just the last week or so.

    May he rest in peace
  20. While there is absolutely some luck here, betting on guys who have been good to stay good seems like a better bet that guys who have been bad to get good.
  21. I mean...this was a win, that was a loss.
  22. This is pretty myopic when you look around and see they are one win from getting into the playoffs The guy has warts and the deadline was really bad, but it’s hard to deny that he has done some things correctly and those things have put the Sox in a spot to play postseason ball
  23. Fedde vs. Lugo Don't care how ugly it looks, just keep winning. Cleveland WILL falter. Lineups TBD
  24. Will you stop talking about us losing out. If we don't win a game against COL we deserve to be sitting at home anyways
  25. He needs to be spanked
  26. Benintendi and Meidroth blew it in the 3rd badly
  27. 4-4 in the 4th inning, and Schriff lets everyone know it’s a long way from being over. Very astute.
  28. Kolson needs to not be in the lineup
  29. Over dependant on analytics
  30. I fucking hate openers
  31. I hate our coaching/GM situation, unreal man
  32. Welp, gonna have to score just like last night. Think they got it in them. This opener s%*# is getting pretty tiring, though.
  33. WTF are we fucking doing? We'll be lucky not to be down 3 runs already.
  34. That's spot on. While the in game stuff can be mystifying in the larger picture hes done very well.
  35. I think I'd trust Tommy to pitch more than Castillo at this point.
  36. I need it to be 6:40pm already. I'm so excited!

Damn this news sucks. Our 2005 guys are starting to go. Loved watching you as a kid Coop. Thanks for fixin em. RIP.

It used to crack me up when he would call in to Rongey after a game, when he clearly had one too many adult pops, to argue with Chris 😂

I always liked Coop, my condolences to the family. RIP Don you will be missed
  40. Last Friday sucked Last night did not
  41. If this team is embarrassing to watch than I’d hate to be a fan of a team that is missing the playoffs. Surely not us.

Sir I knew Javy Vasquez...and you are definitely no Javy Vasquez.

Newcomb's velocity seems fine, but his control, especially on his breaking pitches, has been terrible. I think a lot of it is from fatigue. They keep expecting him to throw multiple high leverage innings at a time with 40+ pitch counts. With Schultz pitching better (and more stretched out), they need to start thinking about using him in the multi-inning roles and let Newcomb go back to being a 1 inning reliever like he was earlier in the season.
  44. Castillo only threw 20 pitches, so he’s available to close - maybe even go 2 innings.
  45. You missed a whole stanza and got some of the words wrong also. Not very South Side, pal.
