When you are paying a game in spring at 100% versus the 80/90 percent happening in ST games, I would bet money that makes a difference. Can you say for sure it wouldn't have happened in Sox camp? No. But also, intensity does matter for those things.
Bob Sacamano
They’re going 110% when they’re not 100% ready for the season. Don’t think you can say the same for Spring Training. Edited 4 hours ago by Bob Sacamano

He wasn’t pulled until the team’s trainer checked him out at half time. They all still thought it was just a grade 1 or 2 knee sprain. The trainer told him to ice it, see if it gets better after a few days, and then have a doctor check it out if it doesn’t. He walked around on it for a week until a doctor checked him out and told him he had a full tear of his ACL and damaged meniscus and needed knee surgery. He could easily lose that 20 pounds over the course of the season so hopefully he keeps eating that chicken and pasta. He looked too skinny last year. I'm a big fan of the WBC, I just wish they moved it to mid-season or something so pitchers could actually participate without the dread hanging over their head. Lip Man 1
I confess I'm not fond of the WBC just for the reason of injury potential as well as guys having to play hard (in theory) for something totally meaningless but over and above that what bothers me are these rosters. You've got guys who weren't born in a particular country playing for it because their grandmother on their step-mothers side had a distant cousin who lived in said country for a year or two. (I know that doesn't make sense but just trying to make a point). If you are going to have this exhibition series at least make the rule to play for a nation you have to be born there and be a citizen of it. Stop stretching things to try to field a roster. If you don't have enough legit players from your country you don't play, aren't invited. Edited 3 hours ago by Lip Man 1

But also why Francisco Cervelli drove around the country 15,000 miles in a van promoting the sport and European championship to develop more native born players even though he's also Venezuelan. Other nations do want it more, like the Asian countries, Latin American countries...everywhere but where baseball was actually born as a sport. You have to find ways to get the younger generations engaged...and this is one of the main marketing strategies. If you watched the Czech pitcher who was leaving the game to retirement and his regular job in Ostrava and you saw the tears before and after the game when he received multiple standing ovationd out of respect. the Australian pitcher's father cheering like a proud lunatic with pride or some of the players actually crying afterwards when they lost to Korea...it meant a lot to all of them. Czechia was already down 0-4 in the tourney, basically playing for just national pride and scared the hell out of the Japanese fans and team/manager. All five countries went crazy for their teams in the Tokyo Dome and supported them far more than US fans in Houston...whose manager looked at that game as a mere formality. How many teams would this eliminate from the WBC, though, because there wouldn't be enough players to field a competitive team? And "I don't care" isn't a sufficient answer since the whole point of the tournament is to broaden an interest in baseball more globally beyond the places it already is dominant?
