Just so someone says it, the type of accountability required by Chicago’s Hockey Franchise isn’t exactly comparable to a bad trade deadline.5 points

I've heard that they're going to spend. I don't know what that means though. Payroll is already pretty high for their standards. La Russa wants to win though, they need players and he's the most powerful voice in the organization.3 points

Whoever is left from 1994 should do some hard thinking. The whole baseball establishment under-estimated the fan anger over the strike. They merely expected fans to come back as if nothing had happened because they thought that's how it always was. One of teams that took the biggest hit was the White Sox. There was big-time fan alienation and interest in the White Sox hit new lows. By the end of the 1990s, even when the Sox showed signs of a developing team, many were turned off and attendance plummeted. Even in 2000, when the team won the division, many could have cared less.2 points

Pre-2005 Ozzie is perfect for that team. Post-2005, when a team loaded with under-performing highly paid veterans needs highly heralded prospects to come up and perform:2 points

The do really matter, but it isn't all the time or necessarily in the big moments. I'll give you an example.. Jerry Manuel had no confidence in Jon Garland. Every time a runner got on base in the 5th inning or later he yank him. In Ozzie's first year managing, Garland was winning a game in Yankee stadium early in the year. In the 5th or 6th inning Jon got in trouble walking guys with 1 out and the bases loaded. Ozzie cam out and Jon was about to hand him the ball. Ozzie gave it back to him, settled him down, and told him it was his game. He got out the inning (with the help from Olivo picking off a guy on 2b) pitched a couple more innings and got the win. Garland was dude after that moment for his sox career. Its those moments that matter. Anyone can really make the decisions on when to bunt, steal, replace a pitcher. Hell most of us at home know which relievers to bring in and when (if only Tony knew).2 points

Well Tony will continue to get paid regardless of whether owners lift a lockout over the next two seasons. Jerry is happy. Tony is happy. Players and fans can pound sand, Just make sure to send in your 2022 Season Ticket money, Jerry will take good care of it on your behalf.2 points

This is the difference between the Braves getting "hot" at the right time and the sox staying home. It would be nice for them to actually work on fundamentals and take it seriously instead of watching the "well fuck it anyone can play anywhere" edition where guys who barely know how their glove works are out in the field.2 points

It's kind of crazy to keep adding expensive veterans to the young core... Didn't anyone learn any lessons from the Cubs, who had a budget in the $50-75 million range above and beyond the White Sox? They had to tear down, because they struck out on nearly all their big FA moves and couldn't successfully supplement the pitching staff from the minors. No doubt it's like being between a rock and a hard place, but underselling on guys like Vaughn, Jimenez and Crochet (and you can add Burger/Sheets as well if you want) is simply going to lead to another situation like the 2014-15 White Sox faced, with 4-5 really good players, but not enough quality depth surrounding them. Yes, we have a younger core, more depth and Luis Robert....but we're still realistically 2-3 players away from being at the top of the AL. Are the White Sox actually going to spend their way out of this dilemma, or be patient for one more year for those aforementioned guys as well as Kopech to develop? Because if they deal more guys (on top of the Madrigal trade) and MISS badly in analyzing all those young talents, then they're essentially looking at 2024 as the last year to keep up the window unless they are willing to spend in the $190-200+ million range in 2024. Of course, the other pressing problem is the expiring shelf life of those five aging, 30 something high-priced veterans is RAPIDLY approaching.1 point

Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Go to downtown Chicago on St Patrick's day and you'll see plenty of shirts associating alcoholism and being Irish. People don't care when you rip on the Irish or joke at their expense.1 point

I know this is an older story / not the formal report, but Paul Vincent recommended they go to the police and made this comment: https://www.tsn.ca/blackhawks-refused-to-report-alleged-sex-abuse-of-players-to-police-source-1.1656229 Again, to me, it seems pretty clear that the alleged assault was communicated and under no circumstance should that not have been addressed immediately. This isn’t some guy making a sexually suggestive comment, this a dude who was accused of sexual violence against an employee. Whether McCub said he was going to do something, clearly he didn’t and that should have been apparent to everyone in know. I’m not suggesting Bowman should go to jail, but the complete lack of compassion for a potential victim and willingness to allow a predator to continue to run rampant should certainly cost him his job. Bowman does not deserve sympathy for doing the absolute bare minimum. Just my opinion.1 point

The Ricketts are a complete disaster of an ownership group and if they owned the Sox their payroll would be at like 120 million. The Ricketts don't have anywhere near the liquidity that you're implying here, and winning ranks very far down on the goals of their ownership.1 point

The only thing that could have possibly caused me to lose interest in White Sox baseball would have been if Steve Cohen bought the team. Not many more evil or scummy people in the history of the financial industry which is really really saying something. Amazing he's not in jail honestly.1 point

As a Mexican American who did a DNA ancestry test that gave me a 72% European (Spanish) and 22% Native American and the rest other result, I can't speak for other NA folks (or who have some NA blood) but the tomahawk chop doesn't bother me at all. I could see how the Chief Wahoo image or the Redskins name can be insulting but I can't see how the names Braves or Blackhawks or San Diego State Aztecs or even Indians etc., can be viewed demeaning but that's just me... I'm still calling that team from Cleveland the Indians, sorry ?1 point

The roller derby team and protentional legal issues were noted during the rollout earlier this year, and reiterated today. https://fox8.com/sports/there-cannot-be-two-cleveland-guardians-teams-in-cleveland-roller-derby-team-sues-baseball-franchise/ Expecting Manfred to chime in and state the team will now be named the Savages, Redskins, or some other name that he will claim Native American groups in the area are fine with, matching his comments yesterday regarding alleged Native American support for the Braves and "The Chop"1 point

This. Sox are already at $160M with Kimbrel and assuming Cesar is bought out. I don't see how they can't be in the $175-$190M+ range if they're serious about winnings. Even the lower end of that is really only possible if you find takers for Kimbrel and Keuchel.1 point

So, spend lots of $ on Castellanos which makes our defense worse, exacerbates are right handed hitting imbalance, and hampers are being able to re-sign our core players when the time comes. Also, sell low on young , cheap players like Vaughn or potential superstars because they struggled after missing most of the year due to injury like Eloy. Seriously people, we have had multiple pages debating me that we can't have Sheets in RF because of his defense, but then suggestions we get guys like Schwarber & Castellanos to play RF.1 point

So it kind of evens out. They have to spend more because of Tony's strategic blunders, but they're willing to spend more because that's what Tony wants.1 point

My guess is they would figure all that stuff out if they had to do so to avoid losing money. I don’t think a rapid bout of player movement is more complicated than figuring out how to avoid the season shutting down over Covid-19 outbreaks in 2020. In the NFL and NBA, like 75% of free agency is done in a couple of days, a week at most, it’s only MLB where owners are trying to drag salaries down, increase their revenue share, and where so many teams don’t want to compete that we have these 3 month free agent sagas. You might have to do things like arb hearings for guys already in camp, a 28 man roster to start the year again, and hire Ron Washington to run a spring training for guys who haven’t signed yet, but those are minor compared with the much bigger disagreements over how the sport is run. So basically, I still think March 1 is within a day or two of your drop-dead date for opening day.1 point

When the Astros were looking at managerial candidates, they asked people specifically if they would allow the front office to dictate the lineups. Many guys said yes. When AJ Hinch interviewed and was asked that question he answered no, that there would be too many days when he would know there was some reason a guy wasn’t ready or needed rest or whatever else was going on and he couldn’t have the front office overruling him on that. He would take their advice and information, but he would get the final call. Note who they hired. While dictating nearly everything from the FO works for the Rays, for most teams, the right answer is striking some balance. If your answer is “I make the f***ing lineups” when someone provides info, you’re doing it wrong and that was Ozzie previously. Outside of Tampa Bay, if your answer is “what does the computer say”, you’re probably also doing it wrong. Previous Ozzie wouldn’t work today for most franchises because he made the F***ing lineups. Has he become more willing to adapt and work collaboratively with a front office, rather than having everything devolve into a fight over personal fiefdoms? That’s for the Padres to decide.1 point
-
I'm not sure that is a good idea by the Padres. Ozzie has a big personality and the trend is to hire younger managers who just say yes to the analytics and front office suggestions. I can't really imagine Ozzie listening to a data nerd who hasn't played past little league on baseball tactics. Yeah I realize two very old managers currently play in the WS but I'm not sure with Ozzie that will go as smoothly as it seems to go with dusty who apparently is listening to Sabermetrics and is not doing his old running pitchers into the ground like he did with some guys with the cubs back then1 point

As far as the Braves are concerned , their front office did a much better job in mid season acquisitions than the Sox FO. Four players in their World Aeries starting line up are very effective Mid season acquisitions, and all can play RF: Adam Duvall, Eddie Rosario, Joc Petersen and Jorge Soler. We could have used anyone of them for our RF position. Our FO dropped the ball adding relievers and no RF, which were available and affordable. The proof is in the pudding with Atlanta in theWorld Series and the Soxplayinggolfand watching TV at home.1 point

I like this for a couple reasons: 1. Even though most of us have a sour taste in our mouth re: Ozzie he's actually a brilliant manager. I watched almost all of the post game shows this yearand he explained what he would do differently over a lot of the questionable TLR decisions. I'd take him over TLR in a heartbeat and I'm by no means a TLR hater. Hope he gets the job. We face SDP at least once I know next year will be a cool series. 2. It will most likely piss off Cloverfield Why I don't like it: 1. It means we are getting more Bacon and Scotty Pods on pre/post game unless Frank wants to step up and become a regular.1 point
-
It's a national tragedy that the guy isn't a manager anymore. PC nerds that have never played baseball want him out of the game.1 point

Please, please please baseball gods, give Ozzie the Pods' job. Certainly he's been humbled by what went down in Miami. They could and should have a clause in his contract regarding his behavior in terms of public comments. Now we all have freedom of speech in the USA, but the Pods could add a clause saying he can be terminated without pay if the organization deems any of his statements to the press detrimental to the organization as determined by a committee of select individuals to be chosen after Ozzie's firing.1 point

Every time I read a discussion regarding sports team ownership, I think of the Green Bay Packers and think/wish that all pro sports teams should be set up the same way. It's such a unique and really cool way for a team to function.1 point

Rocky Wirtz did a nice job when he took over for his father, who had taken over from his father. A family dynasty is often worth more than money. I'd like to see Michael Reinsdorf become co-chair with Jerry moving forward. Then Michael can hire a new GM, like Theo. Hahn has to go.1 point

One thing that is important and not yet said is that the Bulls didn’t just change personnel, they changed literally the entire franchise way of thinking this year. Literally my entire adult life the goal with the Bulls has been to clear enough salary to offer a max contract or two. If you understand max contract levels and the tax level, you could predict what the Bulls would try to do. It even almost worked once, and might have done so but for one player’s legs. The ways teams like the Lakers, Nets, Rockets, Celtics made moves while over the cap but still brought in the players they wanted - you didn’t even need to know those to be a Bulls fan. It was like a completely different language. Then all of a sudden this offseason, the Bulls are making moves over the cap like any of those teams. This franchise went from thinking of themselves as the Sacramento Kings or Minnesota TWolves to acting like the Celtics or Nets in one offseason. It may not work. Houston never won a title that way and now they’re tapped out after their star left. But I’ll say this - what the Bulls are doing now is way more fun than trying to convince yourself that this year they will stay healthy enough to go for the 8th seed.1 point

The franchise needs a completely new face lift, and I doubt that another Reinsdorf can do it. The team has just lanquished for way too long. A division title every 10 years or so doesn't cut it. Change is needed so badly, but it isn't going to happen in the near future.1 point
