This guy going thru the litny of problems with the Sox roster construction. What a welcome change from the alpha fanboy we get stuck listening to every night.4 points

I’m getting tired of this team swinging at everything and anything up there. Stop swinging and take some pitches.3 points

I'm laying 5,000:1 odds that Caulfield doesn't share this article if the Padres weren't mentioned, but in reality, every team is a fit for Ohtani. Everybody can always use more pitching, and if you already have a DH who can't play another position, you'd trade him away to make room for Ohtani.3 points

I've never understood why Chicago is known for their hot dogs without ketchup and deep dish pizza when the Italian Beef is a much better local product.3 points

Well we are smack dab in the middle of our world series window. I keep saying that while going over the personnel in the lineup and looking at the corpse in the dugout.2 points

He absolutely carried us in the second half last year, I'd still give that contract every time.2 points

Just a though but our pitchers were better without Grandal behind the plate. Except for Lynn, I'm not watching because it's Crapple TV.2 points

Why are the Guardians still hustling? Is Francona insane? Someone could get hurt!2 points

Then we wouldn't have pending trades for Soto and Ohtani.2 points

Every good position player + starting pitcher on the team could be hurt and Hahn's assessment would still be that bullpen is the biggest need.2 points

The chances of Engel and a middle infielder going down in the same game AND the game being close AND we end up losing that game because of poor defense in one of those spots are close zero.2 points

Josh Harrison and his ~1 WAR/season production on a short term contract at $4.75M AAV is terrifying yet the thought of Conforto at “maybe” 2 WAR/season on a $15M+ AAV contract is a tremendous idea. But I’m the silly one. Ok, sure.2 points

This is so funny. When I saw this thread, I thought it was being sarcastic, making fun of the trade for Soto thread. You know, mentioning another silly trade idea. I was going to start a thread like, “Let’s trade Leary and Grandal for Judge and Stanton” to keep the idea going. Then I started reading the thread and was it was legit, that some people were discussing this like it could happen. Wow, so funny.1 point

Crazy, right? This would be the largest total value contract in MLB history by more than $11M (Trout, $426.5M), with the highest average salary in MLB history by more than $11M (Scherzer, $43.3M). But let’s think about it this way. Shohei Ohtani projects to strike out 239 batters per 162 games. He also projects to hit 44 home runs and steal 24 bags over those 162 games. How much would a free agent who strikes out 239 batters a year be worth to a contending team, $30M? How much would a 44 HR/24 SB free agent position player be worth to a contending team, $30M? ….. Will teams be tempted to offer Shohei Ohtani an over-market-value smaller contract, especially with a short leash on his ability to pitch full-time, and the heightened risk of injury as he ages? (From Above) How much would a free agent who strikes out 239 batters a year be worth to a contending team, $30M? How much would a 44 HR/24 SB free agent position player be worth to a contending team, $30M? What if 3 years won’t cut it for Ohtani (it won’t). Will 5 years at a slightly higher than market value AAV get the job done? Ohtani is a ridiculously good fit and one of those few people who actually would put fannies in the seats.1 point

Solves RF and LHB and LHP issues in one fell swoop. The timeline with 1 1/2 years vs. 2 1/2 for Soto is a bit off…I think you can only make this move you’re willing to shell out something like 3/$150-180 for 2024-26 or some of the suggested 4-5 year deals rather than 7-8 year timelines which don’t fit the window. Then again, that means a lowered cost of acquisition and you also have the Angels potentially salivating about Andrew Vaughn as well due to the Pac-12 roots and maybe Eloy Jimenez plus all the prospect names thrown around in the Soto discussion are the two centerpieces. Of course it also depends if they want to keep Vaughn at LF/RF/DH forever, where his valued is tamped down.1 point

So what? Cody Bellinger basically averaged 5 fWAR between 2017 and 2020 too. Are you expecting Bellinger to produce 5 fWAR next season? Conforto’s play declined last season and he missed the entire season this year due to injury. And yet, you think it’s a given he will produce 2 WAR next season? 4 WAR is an absolute pipedream. Also, let me ask. How many NL free agents have the Sox signed over the last two decades that have come over and exceeded expectations? Grandal last season, yes, but overall I’m guessing his contract will look like fair value when it’s all said and done. In reality, he puts up big WAR numbers but I’ve argued that Grandal’s actual play is worse than advanced metrics would suggest. And lastly, it’s even more ludicrous to think that Conforto can help the Sox now. That’s completely asinine. Forget about him helping this season. If someone signs him it’s for next season. If you want help this season, you’re better off trading for Tyler Naquin.1 point

“Why do all of our hitters swing at the first pitch?!?! How about we work the count a little for once??? Oh yeah, and why can’t we get some left handed power in our lineup??? Also, by the way, we need to get rid of Moncada and Grandal. Those guys are bums.”1 point
-
Oh yea. Using that logic, we should take Patrick Corbin off the hands of the Nationals. You know because he was good like 3 years ago. And I sure hope you aren’t one of those guys that wants to trade Grandal, Moncada, or Eloy. Because those guys have been great at some point within the past 5 years.1 point

Here’s how I’d rate them with the benefit of hindsight. Cueto = A+ Graveman = B McGuire = B- Harrison = C- Velesquez = D- Pollock = F Leury = F Kelly = F Overall, I’d give the off-season an F though. Not only did Hahn ignore multiple important needs, the vast majority of the moves he made were either dumb at the time or have simply not worked out. It’s an impressively bad off-season and we are super fortunate to play in the worst division in all of baseball.1 point
