Best non-prospect acquisition the Sox made since the WS. Fun to root for since day one. One of the increasingly rare players that made me feel proud as a fan beyond what he produced, and one the extremely rare players who I wanted the Sox to find a way to keep even if it wasn’t the smartest way to win on paper. Hard to get that kind of reaction out of a numbers geek like me. Thanks for everything, Jose. Hope to see a statue in the park one day.

We might think it's a price worth paying but the math is still gonna have to work out when the FO has to account for every penny and even a slight overpayment is likely to result in robbing Peter to pay Paul again.... So when a runner gets on first base instead of giving them some base running instruction, we place our outfield coach as the 1st base coach. Well at least Daryl will be there to collect their pads. This is Sox logic at it's finest.

Hopefully that dumb "rumor" from someone making stuff up based on MLB the Show can finally be ignored.

Summarizing a few things from a few separate threads. The median team put up 1.4 fWAR from their catcher's spot last year. Cleveland put up -0.2, Houston put up -0.6. This is not a position where dominance is required to put yourself in playoff contention. Despite Yaz being one of the worst players in baseball, the White Sox put up 1.7 fWAR from that position. This was largely based on a 2 WAR season from Zavala, with an assist from a 1 WAR season by McGuire. The White Sox currently have 3 catchers: Yaz, Zavala, and Perez. That is a guy on his literal last legs, a guy who was slightly above league average last year, and a young guy who still probably needs work. This is at least, on paper, a league average catcher situation. We probably can't count on either Zavala or Grandal to be a 2+ WAR catcher next year, but if either is, then this is easy. Zavala being a league average catcher would mean he could go for 80-100 games and whoever is ready and healthy could take up the rest. He was really quite good with the bat last year, and the problem he had in 2021 where he couldn't block anything behind the plate was much improved. If Grandal is decent next year after an offseason training routine and new coaches, then again this isn't a problem. If Zavala isn't as good next year, then any improvement from Grandal above "being terrible" still balances that out. If Grandal is terrible for the first month+, then he can be an IL or DFA candidate depending on what Perez is doing. He should not be playing heavily if he is that terrible again. Perez is inexperienced but offensively promising. If he can "not be terrible behind the plate", then it is a good thing long term if he can get some plate appearances if and when one of their other catchers gets hurt. You would really like him to catch some big league games this year, even if he struggles. It is not at all difficult to find a 1 WAR catcher. We know this because the White Sox acquired one last year for Collins, then traded that same catcher away for Diekmann (yuck). If all of these plans implode, it should not be a challenge to acquire another catching option in May or June. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to have a 4th catcher stashed at Charlotte, but isn't worth a lot of money.

The rumor from Footlong is Giolito for Kepler and one of Maeda or Paddack. That being said, the guy is 100% full of s%*# and I think we can put this rumor to rest.

Grandal should not DH more like 5x next season. If he's not catching, he should be riding pine. Unless of course he finds his stroke.

I mean you owe him the money anyway. You break camp with him and see if the winter did anything for him. If not you cut him in June and move on to the winner of Perez and Zavala.

If they weren't going to play some sort of service time game with him, there was zero reason to leave him in the minor leagues in September of last year.

Yeah, seems like a great way to conduct business. The numbers clearly show Clev got tired late in the season. Makes sense coming off TJS. Had he continued his trajectory before September and playoffs a 1/$12M deal would have been a pipe dream.

Nothing. They still have a top 10 catching duo and limited funds. Grandal post knee surgery and rehab should be better. Hahn made this bed...he can sleep in it.

If you're RH, there is NO hill on which you die on. Your job is to give a lawyerly and thoughtful gloss on BS decisions made over your head so as to make chicken s%*# seem like chicken salad. In exchange you get a very good salary and more importantly job security for life. Sure there may be other GMs that make 3-5m a year and you might be stuck between 1-2m but so what, those checks are guaranteed for as long as JR is around, rain or shine. If you've got that gig you don't "die on a hill" ever. You milk it until its absolutely dry.

Hurts. Knew it was gonna happen, but still. I think this was the last free agent signing I was legitimately completely hyped about. The last one where I felt like the Sox were on the right track, making aggressive smart moves. I know it made sense on paper to move on, but I wish he could have retired here.

Honestly, if there is one person in this organization I have some faith in right now it’s Ethan Katz. He’s by no means a miracle worker, but he fixed a broken Giolito and Lopez and took Cease & Rodon to the next level. If he’s telling Hahn that Clevinger is the dude he wants, I think $12M is a price worth paying.

If it really is 1/$12M I like the deal far far less. Kinda steep for a risky bounce back arm. Feels like another stack of cash gleefully lit afire but one Rick Hahn.
