  1. Listen a press release on a new development IS likely to do extremely elementary projections and also likely double counting of jobs that already exist, but I can’t stress enough that this massive piece of land is just sitting there unkempt and unused. We know from the recent riverfront renovations on the east branch of the river that even putting a bunch of expensive box lunch restaurants along a river can create a huge influx of visitors. The poo poohing of the affordable housing of the new housing and affordable housing units while trying to position yourself as if you are a homeless advocate is just horse s%*#. South loop has added a lot of new residences, but it really doesn’t have a lot to do. That is why there would be fewer cars on “Clark street”, (if you lived there you can walk?), and yet we can also see on the other side of Roosevelt a seemingly successful big entertainment development. And that’s just a movie theatre and a mall. Two things people don’t even do that much of. The author also is only capable of pointing to references of stadiums when the 78 press releases are about the entire development. Is the cubs buying up existing businesses and renovating a block the equivalent of this? Not really, but the Lincoln Yards project was $6 billion, mix of public financing for infra while private brought the rest. Hudson yards was $25 billion. Thats what we are talking about. This person just wants to write a “billionaires should build their own stadiums” article because that is an easy and safe place to generate clicks. But they aren’t very smart or interesting to add anything except “oh sure right!0”

  2. Southsidesox is really bad since Margalus left imo. I’m as cynical and jaded as the next sox fan, but they’re just way over the top.

  4. Last year a middle rotation, innings eater with just HALF a year of control returned a top 70 (at the time) prospect and another prospect probably in the 150-200 range. That was Lucas Giolito for Edgar Quero and Ky Bush. Cease's value will not dip below a Ortiz/Hall/pick offer UNLESS a major injury happens. That is the only risk.

  5. They tanked for three years to close out the 2010s to save $150M in payroll, not to gain higher draft choices. Tanking in 2023-2025, perhaps through 2029, is once again to save $50M + in payroll each season. Their two solid picks the past decade were after their two best previous seasons (#22 Montgomery & #26 Noah Schultz). They pissed away their draft picks when they were highest, based both on incompetence and not even giving a s%*# what they did with these players (Burger, Madrigal, Crochet, Vaughn). Tanking in MLB doesn’t mean the same thing as in the other three sports. It means up to 20-22 MLB owners each season will not attempt to compete whatsoever to maximize profit. Between guaranteed MLB shared profits and league revenue and guaranteed carriage fees for RSN owners, all owners need are 26 humans wearing copyrighted laundry to guarantee large ROI, far more than if they park it in the stock market.

  6. This needs to get done. And then book the 100th anniversary All-Star Game there, as god intends.

  7. I've been a fitness buff for over 40 yrs now and at age 64 I don't anticipate stopping despite Parkinsons and numerous abdominal surgeries. I'm hoping I can remain vertical until the new park is built.

  8. Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but it's very funny to me how they just ignore the whole of his White Sox tenure for this framing... Somehow, absolutely nothing happened between his Giant's DFA and late season injury ? When a playoff team trades two of their top 25 prospects and a draft pick for you, you're no longer "under the radar"...and when you have a 132 ERA+/2.65 FIP over a full season, it would be very hard to follow that up with anything that could be considered a "breakout." But sure. I look forward to him producing much the same results as he did here and being heralded as some hidden gem that only the Mariner's staff was savvy enough to unlock after he unfortunately disappeared into an alternate dimension during the 2023 season.

  11. Just looking at SPs that will be free agents after the season on likely non-contenders, the list is…not great. Wacha is the only one that even sort of stands out, and he has a player option, so I don’t know how much that muddies the waters.

  12. I live in Manhattan but grew up in Chicago. Related created a whole new neighborhood with Hudson Yards on the west side of Manhattan. Their experience here matches exactly what they would need to do in Chicago and what I believe they would be successful with. Any comments about the current neighborhood aren't relevant.

  16. this was an incredibly stupid remark that made me not want to read the rest of the article. i'm slightly offended too. "breakout relievers" is a silly thing to write about anyway. the "breakout relievers" are probably treading water in AAA or are currently failing as a starting pitcher. I think this article would've been more entertaining if all of the choices were starting pitchers, Michael Kopech for example has a promising career as a setup man.

  19. This team likely will be terrible, but I'm not holding it against players put in a bad situation. Most of the new guys seem like decent individuals (it's worse to be bad and a fuckface) and some of the younger dudes could be mildly interesting. Mike Soroka has done nothing to earn my scorn. Either has Dominic Fletcher. Might as well give them a chance.....because even when a shitty baseball season is over, I miss it.

  28. We’re talking about guys like this on non-contenders. Unlikely most of those names will on the block come July, which is good for a Cease market.

  29. I know what the CTU pension fund is as my wife payed into it for well over a decade. Related Midwest is a private company though so I'm not exactly sure how the CTU would legally be allowed to invest in the new Sox stadium development? The governmet handout is going to be when Jerry Reinsdorf and Stephen Ross coming ask the City and State for massive subisdies in order to get this project completed. That is when the popcorn will come out. Stephen Ross is worth over 10 billion. JR is most likely worth half of that. Let these billioniares pay for their own stadium if they want it that bad. The teachers union out in Vegas is currently suing to stop public funds from going to construct a new As stadium. I will wager a hefty amount that the DSA affiliated CTU will do something similiar when JR and his cronies come asking for hundreds of millions of $$$.

  30. Wasn't sure where to put this but if you're not trading Cease, any chance Jerry would like to bump up the Sox on this payroll tracker? Chapman and Clevinger sure don't make this club look like they are 35/1 to win the division: RF Fletcher/Pillar LF Benintendi CF Robert DH Eloy 3B Chapman 1B Vaughn 2B Moncada SS Dejong/Lopez C Stassi/Maldonado SP Cease SP Clevinger SP Fedde SP Soroka SP Kopech You probably don't trade Santos if you were going to turn around and spend 100 million but I'm personally fine roling the dice in the pen until the deadline. That lineup is my favorite in the division.

  31. Despite his illustrious playing career, Sizemore accepted the humble role ($15/hour intern) with the Diamondbacks in 2023. His performance during this stint impressed Josh Barfield, the then-director of player development for the Diamondbacks. Barfield, who was a former teammate of Sizemore in Cleveland, was open to bringing Sizemore on board, even when the team had reached its head-count limit. His work with the Diamondbacks marked the beginning of his transition to a coaching role, with strong indications of his readiness to advance in this new direction. From the Diamondbacks to the White Sox Barfield moved to the Chicago White Sox as assistant general manager after leaving the Diamondbacks. He played a significant role in hiring Sizemore to join manager Pedro Grifol's coaching staff. In his new role, Sizemore will focus on coaching outfielders and baserunning, bringing his wealth of experience from his playing days to the next generation of athletes. https://bnnbreaking.com/world/us/from-player-to-coach-grady-sizemores-journey-back-to-the-big-leagues/

  32. We also gave up Lopez who was a pretty desirable reliever. I will continue to look at the trade as Quero for Giolito and Bush for Lopez. Doesn’t change your main point, but I think it’s worth clarifying.
    1 point
  33. I think the odds of Grifol being here next year are super low. I’ve speculated on this before, but I think Getz didn’t want to pursue a new manager yet because he knew the team would be garbage (with a ton of bad vets) and he had other areas to prioritize. Sucks we have to endure him for another year, but it is kind of fitting as I view 2024 as a sort of bottoming-out type season for us. Also, gun to head right now, I kind of feel like Grady Sizemore will be our next manager.

  34. I would love to see someone start ranking on process rather than actual prospects. I like the Sox top 5 in some order -- Montgomery, Schultz, Quero, Ramos, Nastrini -- but the ceiling and probability both drop off a cliff after that. I'd start to feel more comfortable if Mike Shirley is given a free hand to grab high-ceiling high school guys in the early rounds (I'm hopeful) and the Sox change their LatAm strategy to start pulling in the younger, higher-priced teens. Right now, the improvements in their system seem like a mirage based on one great late first-rounder and trades. I'd just like to see the Sox develop an actual pipeline where every year they're adding multiple future major leaguers instead of 2nd rounders who end up as org players and international signing like Yolbert Sanchez.

  35. But that’s where the extremely residential setting of 35 and shields hurts. It’s a great neighborhood and it has lots of good restaurants and cultural attractions. But it isn’t really around the Sox stadium and there aren’t really lots of pedestrians and traffic that signify it’s safety near the park.

  36. When I did my very long historical piece on the relationship between the White Sox and the media in 2010 I quoted the figures from the Chicago Police Department that showed a significant more crime reports and issues around "Wrigleyville" than around the Comiskey Park/Bridgeport Area. But the social unrest of the 1960's gave rise to the perception that the area around Comiskey was a "dangerous place." Perception often becomes reality and the Sox have been fighting that, with mixed results, for decades now.

  37. It’s still the perception though for many casual baseball fans in the suburbs

  39. You get a 3-5 year attendance burst with a new stadium, just like winning a World Series. Then it’s on the team to provide an entertaining on-field product, period.

  41. Chavez was probably one of the best relievers Getz brought in if you looking at his numbers over that last few years, granted he doesn’t fall off the cliff at age 40, which is entirely possible. He hasn’t yet though.

  42. At this point, I don't care that the team is going to suck. This has been a long-ass winter, and I'm ready for baseball. Up until the past few years, I didn't pay much attention to spring training. Now that the Sox have some potentially exciting prospects, it will be interesting to follow what goes on in ST.

  45. Congrats Ozzie. I'll forever thank you for the 2005 title. I can't see us winning another one in thi$ day and age. So thank u again. Say what you want about Ozzie. He may have a big ego but he knows baseball. He just does. If some team was smart it'd take a chance signing him with a clause anything he says the owner deems excessive causes instant termination without pay. I would think he's learned his lesson and we know he knows baseball. Our organization has hired Robin, Pedro and LaRussa for gosh sakes.
