Best player in the class, multiple swings at prep talent, college pitching and power profiles that they feel good about later. No reaches on college bats in early round etc. Your preferred strategy isn't really a thing. You need to sign all the players in the top 10 or you lose that pick and money. You have to philosophically shift the way you look at draft spending and draft classes. You either don't want to or just choose to remain ignorant because you say the same nonsense every year.

You can use that same argument to make the case they can’t afford NOT to take the bird in the hand here. The Tigers should have run away with this division, but they fumbled and left a door open. Cleveland and Detroit will be right back there whenever we play again, and the other two aren’t any further behind than the Sox, in terms of their own “expected” returns to prominence. If you want to wait for a year that the team looks like a WS favorite coming into preseason, you’re going to be waiting a very long time. It’s simply not true that anything less than a WS win is meaningless — and they’re absolutely capable of winning a (EDIT: playoff) series or two, even if they enter each as an underdog. A significant postseason run would a be a huge positive to this franchise, and would benefit the current competitive window, even if it costs something to obtain. More revenue in the short term, more fan interest in the short and mid term, important experience for young players, confidence from a core that can’t be acquired any other way than being there. There’s even a chance it means JR is more confident and willing to spend. You can and should draw a line wherever you think at which guys are untouchable, but the benefits of a successful year are worth investing in.

Sox should be adding, shopping in the rental market. An opportunity is an opportunity, and a playoff appearance is meaningful to the fanbase, the players on the team, and the bottom line. They should absolutely not be trading top prospects, for all the usual reasons plus the fact that this is not the year to be paying extra for a player with an additional year or two of control, as there is a very real possibility of losing next year.

I think Jerry will give the players what they want so the league can avoid a big lockout. He wouldn't want to sacrifice a season while the Sox are contenders.

To play devils advocate, they are in first place and many people around here think they are one of the best teams in the AL. Why would anyone on this team be insulted if they don't make any meaningful additions? Im all for adding players that can help, but it would be ridiculous to trade any of our top prospects to chase one season in this teams current state. If the goal was to build a sustained winner while being able to reinforce your roster from your minors, they are headed in the right direction. It would just be so foolish to do anything to compromise that plan for this season.

Agreed. The idea that this is just the beginning is not something any Sox fan should believe. If this team won 75 games next year, i dont think anyone would be shocked. Make the most of your opportunities while also trying to improve the roster wholes this team has on the pitching side. Make the most of the limited opportunities you have. Most of the Sox current prospects will turn into nothing.

The fact we are about to enter August and none of Schultz, Hagen, or Tanner have instilled any confidence in their ability to be major league pitchers is a massive concern. Throw in the complete Oppor meltdown and the ride range of injuries and it raises a lot of questions. Bannister feels like a guy who tries to get too cute and outsmart everyone. Changing Noah’s slider that was considered one of the best pitches in the minors is an example of that.

No Thaifood takeout trips or tree trimming allowed. Those two poor choices yesterday cost us a win and I hope we all can learn from my poor decisions.

If they are going to trade for good controllable pitching then my concerns are off the table. I just don't want to see them trade away these players for rentals for this season.

This is where I really support using payroll here. Then if you use one of Mason Adams or Sandlin as the headline in a package for one of the Mets pitchers (probably something else too) then I think it feels reasonable and makes us better. I'm not using top 10 or game changing players for non game-changing rentals. If you want to go big and get a Skubal then I get it. If you go for Miller, I get it (for the control) - not my primary move, but you get an elite guy in his spot for a few years. Giving up a top 10 + package for someone like Detmers, just feels odd - get an equal player via rental and then look longer term in the off-season where hopefully ownership can lean a bit into the payroll flexibility they have (while maintaining a better farm system to support the big league club via future trades or developing guys onto the big league squad). Count me out on Detmers unless package is around Sandlin / Mason Adams (I'd be totally good with that - but can't imagine the Angels are).

Realistically we're two SP short and at least one middle innings guy short. There's no way we should give up top prospects when we're that far away. It is what it is. The SP is smoke and mirrors and guys are tiring. The offense frankly did enough to win last night and that rangers game. The SP not being able to get out of the 3rd or 4th inning caused those loses. You can say Will pushed the wrong button but there isn't an ideal button to press when the starter is gassed and can't find the zone before the 4th.

This is such a weird year. The team has largely overachieved, and has a ton of issues that are going to crop up over the next couple of months. They have a ton of players they have to make room for from the 60 day DL, and every player added from the outside complicates that math. There are about half a dozen guys on the 60 day who might show back up. Add four outside players (2 SP, 1 RP, and a C) and you now have 10 40 man roster slots to account for in the next month or so. We also have plenty of pitchers who are hitting the upper limits of their innings histories, on a staff that is already short handed. Can they continue to achieve at that level? I don't know. The other side is I don't know who is demonstrably better. Both the AL Central and the AL are weirdly low this year. We all know the story of the last rebuild where all of these guys were primed for a long run atop the division, and then they all flamed out under Tony. Could it happen again? Who knows. If you push in for this year, and the young pitching runs out of gas, as it well could, will you miss the guys you dealt in the future? I have no idea what I would be doing right now as GM. There are plenty of reasons to go for it, and there are plenty of reasons to do as little as possible to get by.

This really isn't that complicated. There have been zero indications that Getz is willing to move top prospects for a rental. In fact, the report published yesterday said literally the exact opposite. And obviously, that's smart business. If there is a player on the market that has multiple years left, that fills a hole on this team for 2026, and can be counted on in future seasons, that player will come at a higher cost, but given this team doesn't really spend in free agency, making an "offseason acquisition" now makes sense. They need to add, and I'll be shocked if they don't.

He's had a rough year. I think we're better off going with Adams and/or Sandlin. In fact, with the apparent need for 2 starters, I would think at least one of those 2 should be up right now.

They actually gave Boston Jake Bennett this past off-season. If it makes Red Sox fans feel any better, they basically traded Early and Perales for Mead and Bennett. Mead won't be of any use this year, but he's controllable for a long time.

Well he was willing to neuter his own teams chances to get to a World Series in 1994 trying to get a salary cap, which the MLBPA will never agree to. The Sox were actual, real serious contenders then. He also was one of two owners (Marge Schott) was the other to vote against the settlement. I don't think his philosophy has changed regarding a cap and thinking players make to much money but we'll see. Frankly I wouldn't hold my breath that he will.

It's weird. With the pitching, if they run out of gas circa 2020, or 2006, would anyone really be surprised? The offense seems to be more sustainable, but the guys who are being depended on, are themselves full of question marks to a large extent. People are saying we need two starters, but if Schultz, Martin and/or Kay runs out of gas, what happens? The bullpen is crazy amounts of on borrowed time outside of one or two guys. Sure maybe we do the roster management of moving 8 to 10 guys off of the roster, plus whoever we move off from the minors to get those 4 new players, but in those say 15ish players we move to get all of these deals and roster moves, how badly will it hurt the Sox going forward?

I agree with this, but I'd take a rental for a rental price. Rentals haven't been going for top prospects for a while, especially not ones in the Sox range, so I think a rental would be OK. That said, they should be trying to trade for controllable pitching all year, at the deadline, at the end of this year.

I think the key is getting pitching while sacrificing B level talent. Very few deadline deals involve top guys. Anybody in the 10-20 range is fine with me, I’d just prefer they hold onto Bonemer, Fauske, Carlson, McDougal, Hagen, and maybe Wolkow and Boston Smith. Perhaps Toronto would bite on a package of Drew Thorpe, Sammy Zavala, and Jairo Iriarte for Dylan Cease.

Maybe it's just me but I'm tired of the defeatist attitude. Any team that makes the playoffs has a good chance of making the World Series. You need to get there and take advantage of it while you are in position.

It’s called being realistic. If you honestly think this current rotation has a legitimate shot in the postseason, you aren’t being honest with yourself. I also said, if you want to trade any non-top prospects for some rentals, or guys under control for the future, go ahead. But I wouldn’t add to this team at the cost of any top prospects.

No it is stupid. What kind of precedent would it send by standing pat? Not a good one at all. They have no choice. Plus they are in 1st place. The arguments of well they are ahead of schedule or not contenders fall flat when you have the 2027 potential non season and are in the lead for the division right now.

He reaches and punts? What are you talking about? First off, you are anchoring in too much on prospect rankings from the major publications. The simple reality is prep players come with more variance and most teams are willing to pay a premium for a chance at that higher ceiling. Weingartner has a massive ceiling and that’s what the cost reflects. His draft ranking reflects a much lower floor than many college counterparts in the same range. IMO, going after ceiling should always be the priority in the draft. Second, most teams punt a few picks in the back half off the top 10 because the economics make sense to do so. Why use $200k of slot pool in rounds 9 & 10 when you can get similar players for only $50k of your slot (given the first $150k doesn’t count against anything)? Shirley did this three times to help pay the overslot preps in the 6th & 11th.

None of this is statistically significant given its 28 total plate appearances with the Pirates. The problem is you are actually drawing conclusions off a SSS impacted by a ridiculously low .182 BABIP and declaring the player is “not a very good one”.

I don’t recall saying anything about going all-in. You can be buyers without blowing your load. I think the report Dick Allen posted about not trading top prospects and using financial flexibility is the way to go. Standing pat is cowardly and selling is just idiotic. I agree going all-in would be ill advised as well.

It's a bigger slap in the face to be perpetually middling because you keep sacrificing future success for the present day. Sox and Bulls fans should know this feeling well that the path to success isn't found by going all in too early. That's the path to being the Anaheim Angels.
