I’d rather not commit to multiple years of Benintendi. I think the worst you can do in free agency is commit multiple to average positional players. Either go get a Conforto or Bellinger on a one year deal or trade for someone more impactful.6 points

Must be nice. Meanwhile, Hahn & Co were spotted at the local dollar discount store looking to fill out their roster for the millionth off-season in a row5 points

I am not missing any points. I don't really care that the Astros wanted Abreu. He's a fit there. They have a gaping hole at first base and payroll space. The Sox have neither. I won't sit here and say that I think the Sox have deployed their payroll in the most intelligent way, but they're payroll was higher than the Astros last year and they will be very comparable in 2023. Its not a matter of not spending money. The Sox have spent plenty. What lead us to this situation is sort of irrelevant at this point. The day the Sox draft Andrew Vaughn, they decided that AV was going to be their 1B of the future. When the Sox signed Abreu to the 3 year deal before 2020, they decided that they'd have to make things work in the interim. And they did; but it become obvious in 2022 that playing AV in the OF was not something they could continue to do. I am not defending the Sox FO. I think they've largely botched every major decision over the past 26 months. I also absolutely adore Jose Abreu. But the two just didn't fit any longer. The fact that the best team in the AL wanted him because he fit their roster better than ours doesn't really change any of that.3 points

Tea leaves....Cubs sign one of Correa or Swanson and move Nico Hoerner to 2nd. Wait for it...Madrigal returns to Southside as 2nd baseman for '23 and beyond.3 points

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell they get any of those guys. Tyler Naquin.3 points

Yeah it makes sense for the Astros, who didn’t have a 1B. I blame the front office for creating a logjam of 1B/DHs and Jerry for unwillingness to spend like a big market team in the middle of a competitive window.3 points

AKME have been no better than Ryan Pace. What an absolute disaster these bums have been.2 points

I predict we sign Judge In 2031 for $35 mil because we always get our guy2 points

The issue is you continue to miss the point people are making. There are very few people, if any, that are saying the 2023 White Sox should have topped the Astros offer for Jose. No one disagrees that it simply doesn't make sense given the roster makeup. What people are upset about, and rightly so, is that the White Sox let their best overall player walk away, to the team that has been the class of the AL, and the Astors clearly made it known they had to have him. Meanwhile, the White Sox, who told us division titles don't matter and it's "about rings" are coming off a .500 season and only have the resources for B/C level free agents. None of this should have gone down this way.2 points

For 27.85x the cost. That is what matters. The Sox can get similar production for 3.5% of the cost AND improve their OF defense measurably while doing it by putting AV at his natural position. The "I don't understand how the Sox can move on from Abreu" crowd is fascinating to me.2 points

The reality is - I don't think it would be the coach who is the dumpster fire. Donovan may be not be a top 3 coach, but he is a good coach and well respected. I have issues with his x's and o's down the stretch but he does pretty much everything else really well. It seems to me as if they have there own plan and president and Donovan are really aligned and maybe they were under directive from Reinsdorf to try one thing and than finally if that didn't work, another outcome. It feels though there approach is to try and fall forward vs. tank, but it will be interesting to see what happens. There is no perfect way to win in the NBA these days.2 points

does he deserve a second chance...sure, we all do. But to do this with an at risk manager at the helm just makes you an asshole that only cares about self...which is 95% of the issue with every covid denier.2 points

In terms of WAR, a league average starter will produce about 2 WAR (https://library.fangraphs.com/misc/war/). If you had 9 average starters (18 WAR), 5 average pitchers (10 WAR), an average bullpen (4 WAR), and a little on your bench, you wind up with low 30s in terms of WAR for the team that that sets you up to be about a .500 ballclub. Last year Benintendi produced 2.8, slightly above average. The year before that 1.7, slightly below average for a starter. His projected number for next year is in-between those at 2.3, essentially an average starter.2 points

I actually wouldn't hate Gallo. His defense is solid, and getting out of NY could help. I know it's scary because of our history with the Adam Dunns of the world, but if we aren't going to spend for Nimmo, I wouldn't be mad if we signed Gallo.2 points

I can’t see any reason we should’ve paid Jose $20mil a year for the next three seasons at his age. But man will I miss him.2 points

Well that what happens when the 38th richest man in the US Steve Cohen, owns the Mets and cares about winning and spending whatever insane amount of money it takes to attempt to attain that goal. It sucks as a Sox fan, because it's a luxury the Sox fans will never see, until this team is sold and the POS loser owner JR is gone!2 points

Daryl led the outfield and base running instruction which should be reason enough to dismiss him as we didn't fare to well in either.2 points

There have been 5,142 regular season Sox games since 8/2/90. Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko or Jose Abreu played 1B in a 3,915 of them (76%).2 points

They need AT LEAST one everyday player in the outfield. Vaughn + Colas + FA + Eloy ( DH ) > Abreu + Sheets + Pollock + Vaughn1 point

Ever since you suggested outman a couple weeks ago or whatever I’m all about it. Never even knew he existed. My whole goal for the offseason if I was GM has been to turn the outfield into one of the top units in baseball. Outman is perfect to go next to Robert & Colas. Imagine the surplus value potential with the cost of that outfield over the next 3 years. Eloy is DH. Experiment over. Sorry bub1 point

Miller and Stone are good arms in the Dodgers System. To get one of them along with Outman, Hendriks may not be enough so that's where I'd throw in a prospect. If the Dodgers are serious about Judge. Outman may be even more available. LOL you quoted me then quoted me again. That's my personal opinion after I got all the scouting grades and after reading as much as I could about Outman.1 point

I'll admit that I haven't followed him at all since the trade and was going off of what we saw here.1 point

I've mentioned James Outman as a guy I'd trade for in a Hendriks trade. Just skip down to Outman if you rather just read about him. The Dodgers have a ton of ranked OF prospects from MLB pipeline Aug16, 2022 Update. The 1st number is how they rank in the Dodgers system. 3. Miguel Vargas, 3B/OF (MLB No. 44) Age 23, Bats R, Throws R, 6'3 205 ,.915 OPS in 113 G at AAA , Good strike zone awareness, 71 BB 76K Scouting grades: Hit :60 , Power: 55 , Run: 40, Arm: 55, Field:45 Overall: 55 Misc. Cuban 4. Michael Busch, 2B/OF (MLB No. 45) Age 25, Bats L, Throws R, 6'1 210, .823 OPS in 111 Games @ AAA . Not really an OF more like Muncy in that he plays 2nd and 1st base but saw time in LF . Scouting Grades: Hit 55, Power 55, Run 45, Arm 45, Field 45, Overall 55. 5. Andy Pages, OF (MLB No. 69) Age 21, 6"1 212, Bats R, Throws R, Stats dropped going from A+ in 2021 to AA this year. Scouting Grades: hit 45, Power 60, Run 50, Arm 65, Field 50, Overall 55. Misc. Cuban 8. Jose Ramos, OF , 21, 6'1" 200, Bats R , Throws R. Signed for $30K from Panama in 2018, Grew 2 inches and gained 50 lbs after he was signed as a 17 yr. old. Got a quick bump from A to A+ this year but he had some difficulties. Scouting grades: Hit 50, Power 55, Run 50, Arm 70, Field 55, Overall 50. Grades may be lower now if they haven't been adjusted for his growth especially running and fielding but he has a HUGE arm. *13. James Outman , Age 25, 6'3" 215, Bats L throws R, In 2018 Baseball America rated him the best defensive player and best Athlete in the class. Starting in 2021 Outman reworked his swing and since then he's gotten better and better. Every new level he did better than the previous level. He takes walks and hits for power. Despite the 13 rank in the Dodgers system I suspect the Dodgers are highest on him even over Busch and Vargas as an immediate impact player defensively and offensively. Scouting grades: Hit 45, Power 55, Run 60, Arm 60, Field 60. Overall 50. I think if we reworked those grades his overall grade would now be a 55 minimum. He only hit .249 at Sacramento St. but he has come a long way since he was a 7th round pick in 2018 then and is a developmental system's dream player. Very capable in any OF position. I think the Dodgers would trade Busch before they traded Outman and Busch is ranked #45 on MLB Pipeline. But I'd go after Outman if the rankings don't catch up to his true value. His upside is clearly the highest as far as potential WAR.1 point

I do not agree in the slightest. This team is not better paying Abreu $20M in his decline phase and playing a comparable bat that is an awful OF in the OF to keep Abreu on the roster. If you want to ignore the reality of the situation, sure having Abreu is better than not. But, circumstance is fairly important in this instance.1 point
-
Fair enough. But AV in his natural position at $700k >>>>>>>>>>> Abreu on a 3/$58.5M deal for this team, all things considered. I struggle to understand how anyone could disagree with that.1 point

Dave Dombroski was a South Sider who began his career with our Chicago White Sox in 1978 and moved up to assistant GM to Roland Hemond, but was let go by none other than the Hawk. We all know what he went on to do from there when given the money to spend by owners that actually care about their fans.1 point

Cause you get a bunch of 1st round picks for taking him on. Getting Westbrook is the 1st move they should do if they plan on blowing it up and essentially tanking the rest of the year.1 point

Why would the Sox go back on Madrigal? Even if you want to believe the Sox had something to do with his performance here (Tony or whoever) he was even worse last year with the Cubs, and just as unhealthy.1 point

Hard pass on Gallo. Nimmo and Conforto will be too expensive. And someone will outbid us on Benintendi.1 point

Because he’s a two win player and the exact definition of average. Tell me how he’s above average exactly.1 point

Every top 100 kind of list I've ever seen is reflective of the age of the respondents. For the last 30 years, it's 1st base. If you want to really consider legacy positions, I agree with Mighty Mite's list which begins with Chico Carasquell in 1952. That list doesn't even include one of the one of the all time greats: Luke Appling who was at short, (and then some third) for 20 years starting in 1931 So it's the better part of 90 years vs. the last 30 years1 point
