Am I the only person who thinks it's crazy to have a strong opinion on Jake Burger either way?6 points

Glad we were acting like we had Cy Young as our available pitching trade piece, and shunned offers that were probably moreso in line with what would be expected.5 points

I have a feeling last year was a Cease fluke year, and not trading him at the deadline will haunt us5 points

I can’t believe they drafted him. I hope someone throws this in my face in a few years….but he seems like such a bad pick4 points

The biggest concern with the trades I have, and someone else mentioned them, is almost everyone they acquired was having an average year, or worse, compared to their previous season.4 points

If this is the useless argument thread, can someone point me to a thread where we collect scouting reports on the new Sox farmhand?4 points

And this is what I'm complaining about. Burger has 5 more seasons of control by my count. they want to retool on the fly, well that doesn't make sense as you're taking 40 hrs and a decent player off the team. If they want to rebuild, well he's got plenty of time left. The direction of this trade is completely nonsensical no matter how you want to spin it.4 points

Wow, more delusional BS from Hahn. He sure does have a misguided definition of right handed power in MLB in 2023. Of course as we know by now, anything out of Hahn's mouth is usually pretty stupid. After Robert, the next two leaders on this team with HR's are have Vaughn and Eloy tied with 13 home runs. There are 94 players in MLB with 13 home runs or more. However there are only 12 players with 25 home runs or more. Keep in mind you take away Burger's 25 home runs and the team now only has 94 home runs which is tied for 29th. Once again the brilliance of genius Hahn with his slick observations on the Sox strengths.4 points

We got him off the scrap heap, I would rather try to get another scrap heap reliever on the cheap than pay Middleton a few million dollars. You just gotta churn these guys in and out and hope to get a good season from them.4 points

Burger seems like a dude that works his ass off. With more experience, he may become a dude who learns the strike zone a bit and walks a little more. Or he may not, who knows.4 points

Dunning, 0-3 with a 6.10 ERA in his previous three starts, retired 21 batters in a row before Seby Zavala homered with two out in the eighth inning of an 11-1 loss.3 points

The White Sox acquired right-hander Lance Lynn in a trade with the Texas Rangers, the team announced Tuesday, bolstering Chicago's rotation with a veteran who led the major leagues in innings pitched this year. Lynn, 33, was perhaps the most prized pitcher on the trade market and cost the White Sox 25-year-old right-hander Dane Dunning, who goes to Texas along with left-handed pitching prospect Avery Weems.3 points

I'm wondering if people wouldn't give two shits about Jake Burger if Yoan Moncada weren't also involved.3 points

Lambert got called up today, so there’s that. Sosa better be getting the next shot. Kid needs to play everyday consistently from here on out to see what they have in him. I’d like to see Grandal DFA, and let Lee start. Give Perez the 3rd catcher spot for September.3 points

You mean look hard at the entire year of his 1st attempt at playing a full season in the big leagues ? He must be been really good to have crashed so hard and still have 115 wRC+ and 1.4 fWAR . Was he up at 175wRC+ or 2.5 fWAR at some point ? Wow tell me more .3 points

First of all, I wasn't talking about on the field value as only being about fielding. Your statement was he had limited value on the field. Having said that, Burger had only 3 errors this year in 149 chances to Moncada's 3 errors in 102 chances. I know there are other defensive analytics, but errors are still valid. However the other debate which many of us here have stated factually, is the fact, Burger crushes Moncada in home runs and slug %, which is on the field in the lineup value. Plus for a guy who has such poor plate discipline, he has a higher OBP than Moncada. You're right though I'm glad we get to learn new things everyday and thanks for letting me know that Moncada is more valuable than Burger at third, based on all factors of hitting, fielding, hustling, effort, availability/healthy and attitude.3 points

I’m in the middle. I like Burger and having a cheap power bat like that is nice but the Sox also need starting pitching depth so I get it. I just would have preferred sending a “big” name like Eloy instead. Frees up more payroll and Burger has more flexibility defensively. The tweet about Hahn not wanting to let go of his prized possessions was spot on (best draft pick - TA, best trade - Cease/Eloy, best free agent signing - Robert).3 points

Whatever, you can draw sides and make it “like and don’t like” burger but that’s not what I have said at any point. He seems like a swell guy, just limited on the field. Enjoy your club3 points

You stated some anecdotal facts and continued with them. I got it, I understand how his numbers look, I’m just not gonna fight for a redundant player on this lineup because he hit some bombs in April and may3 points

I believe you missed the context of the original poster who said, "With more experience, he may become a dude who learns the strike zone a bit and walks a little more." I was just stating facts. Everyone here was complaining about he doesn't take enough pitches and wanted him to be more patient. He was starting to do that. I realize it wasn't a lot of games, but it was more walks in those games than any other Sox player. At least he was trying to make adjustments, unlike others on this team. time will tell and it will be interesting to watch his progress in Miami. I think he will get better at plate discipline.3 points

Generally, I see advanced stats as a potential problem withe talent evaluation and player/roster decision making. Burger lights up the crowd and draws fans to the park with 450 ft. bombs. Where is that in the advanced stats? For me the Burger decision should have been simple. He earned the 3rd base job so put him there and move Moncada to second. Don't remove an asset that you can't easily replace. I would say the same thing with Eloy. No reason to trade a guy that hits for average and has his power potential. Oh, he had 19 injuries..including surgery for appendicitis, elebrating after a game, and extending his hand over the fence to catch a home run ball. Eloy will be less susceptible to injury as a DH so you keep him unless you want a lineup that is really strapped for power and is unexciting for fans. In short, the trade game has to look at things beyond player stats in order to end up with a team that is good and exciting for fans to watch.3 points

That Sox FO did what any functional FO of a team 20 below .500 would have done: They sold off the short termers. That signifies neither rebuilding nor contending. and then they traded Burger. That doesn’t fit either category. I guess they just didn’t like him as a player. and then Elvis Andrus starts tonight, and the team endured its 2nd shutout loss in a row and we’re back to the White Sox that we know and love.3 points

I gave him a hopeful C The actual trades made will only be good if the White Sox can actually train them properly so that they develop to near their potential, something the White Sox haven't been good at. Equally, it was only a C because I think they could have cleared out more than they did. I was sad to see Burger flipped but unless they are going to get rid of Moncada (which will be virtually impossible given what he is owed in 2024) then Burger really has no position other than DH, and his value was probably near its peak at the moment.2 points

Hahn effectively added the following: One high-end catching prospect One post-hype catching prospect Three quality SP prospects in AA A semi-interesting relief prospect A lottery ticket arm in the lower minors a 32 year old, RH 4th outfielder Hahn gave up the following pieces to do so: The best rental SP on the market An expensive SP with bad 2023 results Two relatively cheap rental relievers One overpaid reliever with a club option One overpaid reliever with a 2024 salary A controllable 1B/DH with huge power Overall, I’d grade the summation of these trades an A-. I hate Rick Hahn with all my heart, but he did very well in trading these pitchers, addressing org needs without sacrificing overall talent. I downgrade the overall grade slightly due to the uncertainty of the Burger deal. Eder sounds pretty legit if healthy, but the scouting reports on him since returning from TJS are very mixed. If the stuff is there, then this is a very nice return. But if the hope is “Coop will fix ‘em” I’m not sure I feel quite as good about that gamble. That being said, I give his broader deadline a hard C. Hahn has improved the outlook for 2025 forward, but under no circumstance are we better for 2024 despite Hahn trying to spin it that way. And that lack of clear direction is very problematic, especially when we were in the midst of a strong seller’s market. Now, it’s very possible the returns weren’t there for Cease, Tim, or Bummer to pull the trigger and if that’s the case you hold until the off-season. But saying there is a path to contention next year when you have a garbage core and close to a dozen holes is highly concerning. Burning through Cease’s value in some Hail Mary attempt at winning in 2024 would bring my grade down to an F-.2 points

I voted A. I was able to arrive at this conclusion because I never thought for a moment that a true rebuild was on the table, and when you've been abused for so many years, you start to accept messed up things as ordinary. Given the constraint that 2024 was going to be a re-tool, I think Hahn did as well as I could have imagined in taking advantage of a strong sellers market to extract a substantial amount of value from his pending free agents. I was impressed by literally all of the returns, as well as the sheer number of trades he made. All the FAs out the door except Grandal, right? I expect the White Sox to ruin the careers of all the prospects they received, and for Hahn to spend all of the payroll space he has on 1.5 WAR free agents and enter 2024 with a worse roster than he had in 2023. Go Sox.2 points

He also had a July OPS of .865 and led the team in walks, HRs, SLG, RBI, runs scored and games played. If he was such a bad hitter and such a bad fielder how the heck has he managed to accumulate 1.4 fWAR and and have 115 wRC+ ? I understand there are a few fans who hate the trade because it was Burger traded. I think it was a good trade. I'm just wondering if Vaughn or Eloy could've gotten him instead. At minimum the Sox have Eloy for 1 more year or maybe it's worse if they have him for 2 or 3 more years @ $42M and he never can stay in the field. Will have to revisit this more than once in the next few years not only to see how Burger,Eloy and Vaughn have faired but also Eder.2 points
