He’s 7th in fWAR for starters in MLB the last 3 years. He won’t make 9 million next year. He will bring back a lot.

Why wouldn’t they want him? He’s already in the majors, hits lefty, is good defender, has a lot of team control. Checks a lot of boxes.

Certainly not disagreeing with you but this is what good teams do. They know they’re going to take a hit on the backend but worth it to try and get a championship on the front end.

If Cease doesn't have value for a top 25 prospect ++ then you keep him and enable him to rebuild that value. Simple as.

The Sox should target C/1B Samuel Basallo in a trade with the Orioles as a secondary piece. He was 18 for most of the season. Bats lefty. Made it to AA. Across 3 levels he hit .313 with a .402 OBP, 20 HR, also stole 12 bags. Kid has a huge arm behind the plate, although his size may force a move to 1B. Kid can absolutely mash. He's going to be a top 25 prospect in the sport very soon. If the Sox can get something like Cowser and Basallo in a Cease deal, that would be great.

I'm actually encouraged by this trade. I made a post a week ago that Getz would or should be shopping among the non-tenders since the 40 was so weak. The encouraging part is by making the trade he didn't have to wrestle with other GMs and agents once non tenders become Free agents. He went to one of the most talented 40s in baseball or A. Anthopoulus came to him. I'd love to give Getz credit but this may have been AAs idea since it was the Braves who wanted Bummer at the trade deadline because the Phillies have a lot of good LH hitters. I have said that I wanted to see what Getz's 1st significant transaction would be because it would set the tone for what was to come. Maybe we can put to rest any notion that S. Perez or Merrifield end up on the Sox . With precious few dollars to work with and little talent to trade at least Getz held true to his word about SP depth and defense while increasing depth in the middle infield.

Giolito is rated #8-12 on most lists, Lopez in the 19-23 range...pretty hard to believe, but that's how scant the pitching market is. Flaherty SEEMS to be racking up about the same amount of interest as Giolito, and there are obvious reasons for comparisons. Wouldn't mind seeing him back with Katz, but can't imagine that JR will sign off on even that if it comes in around the Clevinger range of $$$ and years. Really think some are underselling Cease and what he's truly worth with two affordable years left AND his very reliable durability to take the ball for 30+ starts.

Giants play New England next week. Bears are set up perfectly for the draft. That Arizona-Carolina game in a couple of weeks is going to be huge.

Win would have been nice, but terrible in the grand scheme of things. A win would have knocked you out of the top 5 in draft position. This loss was pretty much squarely on the coaching staff. They had ample opportunities to go up by 3 scores, instead they kicked 3 field goals because they were content with 3 points and the play calls on 3rd down telegraphed it. The defensive head coach's defense then let Detroit cut through his defense without any resistance and gave up 15 points in 5 minutes. It's hard to blame the players when you were content not scoring more points, thinking your defense was good enough. This and the Broncos game, and to an extent, the Washington game were all great examples of just how bad this coaching staff is at playing with a big lead. They get complacent on defense and run extremely safe and low yardage plays on offense just to allow the opponents back in the game. That's not winning football.

But..but we were told Cease had relatively little value because owners would somehow prefer to pay well over a hundred million dollars and burn through their profits!

Cease controlled for 2 years with an estimated salary of $8.3M (per Spotrac) should command a nice return.

I think Sox need a better headliner than that. That’d be pretty disappointing for 2 cheap years of Cease unless there was another solid piece in there. Colas was a backend top 100 prospect a year ago and most of this fanbase is ready to be done with him.

I don't think Schultz will be to 30, probably to 50. I guess it depends on what top 100 list we are referring to. I'll stick to mlb.com list since it's free and accurate enough. If Sox trade him for the 50th and 95th prospects, I'd be disappointed. Rather have a top 15-20, and a young guy already playing.

Just keep in mind Colson is basically a top 15 guy, Schulz top 30. So there is a difference between “two top 100 guys” and “two top 30” guys.

This would work. If they trade Cease they need to get at least one high end pitcher.

Baltimore ownership is notoriously cheap and I read that Burnes’ projected salary number next season is $15 mil via arbitration where as Cease’s would be around 8.8 mil. Also acquiring Burnes isn’t gonna be significantly cheaper this is from Jim Bowden, who I know isn’t reliable but his take was this: The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, a former executive, led his five-team trade fits for Burnes with the Orioles. He wrote that a package consisting of left-hander DL Hall, right-hander Chayce McDermott, corner infielder Coby Mayo and outfielder Dylan Beavers “would probably be close to what it would take to land Burnes.” I’d assume Mike Elias would prefer the extra year of control with Cease, the O’s match up perfectly with the Sox just have to be willing to nut up and quit prospect hugging.

The way I see it, they need to rip the bandaid off now and trade Cease this offseason. I don’t see how holding him into next season accomplishes anything. Yeah, maybe he will pitch better than he did in 2023, but it’s also possible that he could have another down year or even worse, get hurt. Not worth the risk to me. Cash in now.

I’ve never met another person whose entire evaluation is to take the previous season and assume that continues on forever. I also don’t know how anyone could be using ERA as their primary pitching metric in this day & age. Secondly, what is a top 100 prospect worth? Are they all worth the same and if your answer is no, then what type of top 100 prospect is Cease worth? Also, why was Giolito with 2 months of control worth a legit 50 FV prospect, but two years of Cease plus a potential compensation pick is worth the same? If you say it’s because of the “market”, who are all these free agent SPs with legit TOR ceilings that will be affordable to teams like the Orioles? Finally, how do you know there wasn’t a strong deal last year? There are rumors that Hahn was asking for Jackson Holiday until very late in the process (i.e. not serious negotiating). Perhaps Elias made an offer that would be to Getz’s liking now? It wouldn’t be the first time two teams couldn’t agree to a trade at the deadline and then for it to happen in the off-season (Sale, Lynn, etc).

It's a good trade. Yes, Soroka is coming off a bunch of serious injuries but his stuff has remained relatively the same particularly his velocity. He probably won't ever be a frontline starter but even a 4th or 5th starter is more valuable than Bummer. Lopez is nothing special but can be used as a utility guy which is the path you should pursue going to year with these guys rather than signing guys like Garcia to extension. Shewmake is AAA fodder and since he is out of options will probably be DFA at some point. Shuster had a good minor career. He doesn't have frontline stuff but once again there is value in having either be a longman or a 5th starter. There is also the potential should he be moved the bullpen he finds a cpl of miles on his fastball Getting potentially two backend starters with control and an utility player for a reliever is a homerun.

Why would you want that? Most of this board hates Moncada abd would love to see Kopech gone as well. When you have a guy like Robert, you keep him until it makes no sense not. You can't get a guy with his talent with 4 years of control at his pay rate.

These pitchers are the types the Sox are going to have tobhit on once in a while. Their system has no acr type guys. They don't have the prospect currency to trade for one, and they aren't signing one for what JR will pay.
