0 era in 12 innings in AA with 11.7 so/9. Sure he's nobody but how did we get literally anyone for Grossman12 points
-
Trading him this early opens up the possibility that he sucks at Texas, gets DFA'd, picked up by the Sox, gets on another hot streak, and gets traded AGAIN before the deadline.7 points

This guy might not work out, but signing Grossman accomplished something.6 points

To me it was worth the gamble on Soroka snapping back to being pretty good. It's Aaron Bummer who is owed some decent money. It didn't work out, but it made some sense. I would rather have Shuster than Bummer on the 2024 and 2025 White Sox.6 points

A while ago I remember Hawk having a conversation in the booth. It basically went something like this: "You know what Stone Pony, if your last name is too long, you have two options. Get a different name or get a bigger back." No bullshit, that's pretty much the context of what he said. I have no idea why it stuck in my head, but I'll be damned, when they made the letters smaller, I can only imagine Hawk being mad that wasn't one of the two options he laid out years ago.5 points

It could still work out great. And I’m not ready to write off DeLoach either. Just super frustrating that we acquired a pair of 25+ year old OFs and neither can help us right now despite two massive openings on the major league roster.5 points

This. Soroka was a worthwhile gamble on for a bad team that needed MLB pitching. He's been terrible, but it was good process. Had he shown glimpes of his early-career self, that is a very nice trade chip. Just didn't work out that way. Shuster and Shewmake were perfectly reasonable secondary pieces to take back, and Gowens was a fine longer term tertiary piece. Lopez was questionable, but obviously we all know the Sox 2B history, and even though his arb figure is about $2M too much, he was also a fine enough bounceback candidate and he can play some D. He can't hit a lick, but his defense does make him a major league. But he'll be a no brainer non-contender for 2025 at the current arb price.5 points

Guy sounds like he should be a defensive back at Southern Cal. 80-grade name.5 points

Honestly I'm oddly into this train wreck of a season and yes, that's partially why I've taken it up. Soxtalk deserves some active threads and talk even if the team doesn't really deserve our attention or applause. Baseball is the backdrop of the summer and no matter how s%*# this team is I'll have it on with at least a half eye cocked on it.4 points
-
They couldn't even turn it around if it was the Hokie Pokey.4 points
-
I still think that trade was good, personally. The draft pick offers lots of flexibility.4 points
-
I think this is actually quite simple. Robbie Grossman is an above average right-handed hitter. Over .800 career OPS from the right side against left handers. Limited sample size, but that was continuing with the White Sox (.976 OPS). Over 900 with Texas last year too. Meanwhile, Texas Rangers outfielders Travis Jankowski and Evan Carter (both lefties), are terrible against left-handed pitching. On top of that, Wyatt Langford, another outfielder, just went on the DL for them.4 points
-
I no longer think they're gonna take a pitcher. I think they're gonna take a bat. Which bat I'm not sure but as of now I'd put my money on Rainer.4 points

We are about 45 days in: ATL gets Aaron Bummer + 0.2 fWAR CHW get: Jared Schuster + 0.1 fWAR Nicky Lopez -0.1 fWAR Braden Schewmake -0.5 fWAR Mike Soroka -0.5 fWAR Riley Gowens mercifully is just a 24 year old sucking in A+ Totals ATL +0.2 fWAR CHW -1.0 fWAR Which on a normal team would indicate that not trading bummer would mean the sox added 1.2 wins above replacement to their team. But obviously, we know its possible Getz would have found even worse players than Shewmake and Lopez, so this may be true that it prevented even more harm.4 points

Seriously tho, that was a solid win.3 points

I think with the state the sox are in, these smaller moves on the margins end up being a little more important than they should be. Every little bit helps.3 points

Zach DeLoach currently has zero HR’s at fucking Charlotte a month into the season. This is what happens when you replace the legendary Haber laptop with Gene Watson unfortunately.3 points
-
He's a former 30th rounder who will turn 24 this year. Not a bad flyer for a guy who literally no one (including Texas) wanted to sign this off-season.3 points
-
Sure. Getting a guy who might contribute to the Sox bullpen yet this season for Grossman is a win. Wonder who gets the newly opened roster spot.3 points

Guy has pretty good numbers. I'll take it.3 points

I feel like we have be near the end of the road with Soroka. He’s been terrible and it doesn’t appear he’s close. His stuff won’t play in the pen. It was a worthwhile gamble, but you’re just not going to be able to turn him into a meaningful trade asset at this point.3 points

In theory, by next year, the payroll should drop enough to cover the drops in revenue and leave SOMETHING to be spent. They have 98 million the books for 25 IF they exercise everyone, including Moncada (lol), ILoy (lol), Stassi (lol) and Maldanado (lol), they can actually get down to about $50 million without them. If they want to spend, they can.2 points
-
Can't wait to see what he does next season with no money to spend and no assets to trade. Should be a banger.2 points

I'm wearing this losing streak for the board. Got nothing better to do at work than wait for this stupid s%*# team to post the lineup today anyways.2 points
-
Maybe. That’s one way to look at it. another perspective is that he hasn’t really moved the needle at all in terms of the org. Sure, he’s made nice little deals here and there, but it seems like there isn’t a lot done to fundamentally shift the organization’s core standing, besides the Cease and maybe Bummer trades.2 points

Agreed with this. I think it'll be Rainer or Griffin and it'll be underslot.2 points
-
In the big picture, not really. It’s unlikely any of the guys involved in these periphery trades amount to anything (including this one). People point to the Tatis trade but Shields was actually a significant acquisition at the time regardless of how it turned out. and what’s your issue with the moves he’s made so far? Everyone seems upset about the Mena trade in the same way they were upset about the burger trade last year. This too shall pass.2 points

Grossman has a .976 OPS against lefties this season.2 points
-
I've said this before, but last season Sox would often bring Bummer in with the game on the line and a left-handed hitter up. He would invariably walk that first guy, and then he has to face the next two righties, and Boom.2 points
-
They are paying Lopez $4.3m and Soroka $3m and Soroka probably gets cut soon because he is complete trash. I'd much rather pay Bummer $7m than Lopez and Soroka over $7m.2 points

A 30 year old who won't bring back anything! LOL2 points

In an analysis like this, I tend to totally discount the negative WAR values — we could demote or get rid of those guys if there was a need to immediately improve those spots. And, of course, Sox are playing a longer game here. Shuster is probably the most key player. Hasn't been super impressive yet, but he's got a while to potentially return value. That's true of Gowens also but he's much more of a long shot. Shewmake is under control for a long time as well but it's getting harder to see how he becomes a good player. But sure, let's put him in AAA and see if he ever figures something out and/or gains 25 pounds. Bummer has a 0.2 fWAR but also a 0.0 RA9/WAR because he once again has a worse ERA than FIP. Unlike last season, his Statcast xERA matches his ERA. Bummer is at least doing something a little different so far, cutting his walk rate in half. But his fastball velocity has dropped another mph (after a mph drop last year) and his whiff rate has dropped a lot perhaps as a consequence. So part of the evaluation concerns whether you think Bummer would have gained value if the Sox held onto him.2 points

Im pretty sure its only posters on this board that think Bummer is a worthless piece of garbage.2 points

Hey a trade that makes sense, amazing.2 points

I'd rather have Bummer. I also think Shuster is really bad and has zero chance of helping this team. Soroka becoming good again was the only chance that trade would have any value and the chances of that happen were insanely small given he hadn't been good in 5 years.2 points
-
I will continue to repeat: Replacing the GM, manager, or anybody else really is pointless until someone new owns the team. Anybody who would be good at those jobs isn't going to want them, and even if they did, they wouldn't be given the resources to succeed. At the very least Getz isn't giving out bad 3+ year deals that the next guy will be stuck with.2 points

The A's left Oakland because of no support. The Rays have had no support for years despite being good. Where are you going to find two more places that can support teams, and where are you going to find 26 more major league quality pitchers?2 points
-
That's some good sound off the bat. Also, better hope Brad Keller isn't allowed to hang around by the time Wolkow hopefully reaches the majors. He'll kill him for that flip.2 points

As soon as a guy gets out of the shithole that is this organization he starts to produce. We shouldn't be surprised.2 points

He needs to look in the mirror, he was part of the problem last year. He’s being nice if he thinks the 2024 White Sox are going to go on a nice winning streak, the 3 they won in a row from the Rays was a miracle. As this abomination of a season continues the more I hate Reinsdork and what he has done to our franchise.2 points
