  1. I have not heard this one before, but apparently some call the extra inning runner the Manfred Man, and I am here for it.

  3. You can't blame the players for playing down to their competition when the entire organization does the same thing.

  4. It hasn’t worked for SD yet, and may not ever with a behemoth like LAD in their division. All things being equal I’d still rather have an owner and GM who are actually trying. It’s more than we can say about the dopes at 35th & Shields.

  5. The White Sox have won more games that the Padres both the last 2 and 3 seasons combined. Preller is mad man. I certainly admire his style from a distance. But to this point, the Padres have had limited success, just like the Sox. They did make the NLCS las season, but otherwise look remarkably similar to the White Sox production wise over the last 3 seasons with just 2022 and 2021 seasons flip flopped.

  6. What I don't understand is if they love this rule so much, how come they don't use it in the playoffs?

  7. It should start no earlier than the 13th. Gives teams another turn through the batting order to try to win it the old way.

  8. Where are you staying? Lots of good food....if near Tempe and depending on your age, there's always Mill Avenue. When I went to Camelback, by far the coolest part was showing up mid morning and walking the backfields. Doesn't cost a thing and you get REALLY up close to guys practicing - from no name minor leaguers to major league starters. You can just sort of wander around. It's very cool. Can get great pictures, and there's opportunities for autographs if you're into that. I'd also check out other spring training setups. I went to an A's game as well since the Sox weren't in Glendale one day and I was able to get free tickets. Check out the Cactus League schedule. The Sox host the Colombian WBC team on March 9 and the Padres March 12, at the Cubs and Padres the other two days. There's also the occasional night game where you could catch one game or walk the back fields in the morning, and then check out a 6 PM start at another complex. Really depends how much you want to nerd out on baseball. Spring Training is really neat if you haven't done it before and if you have a kid, you'll never get a chance with them to get closer and maybe grab a BP homer on the back fields or something. I did it six years ago with my dad about a month before he died, and it was very worth it.

  9. Based on the fact that the Padres knew about this, we can conclude that MLB knew about this at least in September of last year, possibly several months earlier than that. MLB needs to get off its lazy manfredian ass and do something. Either put him on leave and get a suspension done or if they have reason to support him they need to do so publicly. The domestic violence policy asks for this to be taken care of in a couple weeks, not a year. This isn’t fair to the victim, who seemingly had to share pictures of her bruises to make MLB get off their butts and listen to her. This isn’t fair to the White Sox players who have this guy around. This isn’t fair to the White Sox team who have a player whose status is unknown. This isn’t fair to white Sox fans who have to decide if they’re cheering their laundry or booing domestic abuse in Arizona. This isn’t even fair to Clevinger. Do your damn job Manfred. Either suspend him or say why you’re not, coward.

  11. Sports are very simple. As a fan, are you satisfied your team did everything it possibly could to compete? The Eagles just experienced a terribly bitter loss, but they put the best team out on the field they possibly could all season...totally rebuilding (and fast!) after their last Super Bowl win. They simply got out coached by a master...who was highly motivated (along with his tremendously loyal players) in a match-up with the organization that infamously gave up on him. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-rumors-padres-sign-top-international-prospect-ethan-salas-orioles-interested-in-michael-wacha/ Just freaking try to compete. The White Sox haven't had a legit All-Star catching prospect (not accepting Collins here) of their own in decades...so go out and get one. Luis Robert is the only occasion other than Abreu in the last decade plus where they were the aggressors and successfully signed a potentially great player. But you have to consistently go after great players with the conviction you can sign them and the willingness to back it up with real money and not just loophole contracts that create the illusion you've got a seat at the table.

  12. If that's the case, why are the White Sox seeing a 25-30% fall off in season ticket sales...and the Padres sold out all their available season ticket packages by January 25th? What is the equivalent of the White Sox beating the Mets, Dodgers and Cardinals in the post-season? The Yankees/Astros, Cubs, Red Sox, etc.? And by the lack of playoff success metric, the Dodgers and Rays have been terrible the last decade...yet they are universally regarded by most as the two best franchises for various reasons. The only WS championship for LA since 1988 was in the tainted strike-shortened year. Zero for the Rays. And the Braves went to the postseason constantly in the 90's and 2000's and only recorded a single title. Indians also zero, etc. Would the Chiefs be considered a disappointment too if they only had one title (instead of two) after five consecutive AFC Championship appearances (all home games)??? Context counts. If the White Sox beat two teams that significantly outspent them in the post season...let alone their own division...it would be considered a minor miracle.

  13. That's not true at all. The Sox fan base's level of hope would have this as a 20 win team.
    2 points
  14. If they factored in hope the Sox would be projected to win the division by at least 10 games.

  15. If there has to be change, change the definition of game to 13 innings, whatever, and deal with ties in the standings. Just do it. Changing the competition itself is very disturbing.

  16. The length of the games should drop significantly this year. I think, since most concession stands have been closed up, beer sales have stopped, the teams couldn't care less how many people are in the stands for the 13th inning. The rule is there so they won't burn pitchers. If that's the case, why not do it in the postseason as well?

  18. Why would anyone want to be a fan of a team with an aggressive, creative GM who desperately wants to win when you can be a fan of a team with a GM who is the exact opposite.

  19. This bullshit rule is just confusing....I turn on the game in the 10th excited that Josh Harrison led off the inning with a double and then realize that all he did was make the last out in the 9th.

  20. It puts the home team at an immediate disadvantage. The road team gets to hit with a tie score and generally, less pressure in the top half of the inning. Whereas in most instances, the home team will be playing for a tie, and a more pressure filled half inning. There have been some quality baseball games I've watched where when this rule takes effect the whole tone of the game changes. Well pitched or defensively sound games go sideways and it detracts from the games integrity. There are many downsides if you choose to examine it.

  23. I know we're not supposed to get political, but this is personal. I'm a senior in college right now (though not MSU). I'm about ready to head to a classroom, probably not unlike the one where two MSU students were killed last night (a third was killed at the student union, five more in critical condition). It took a long time to get myself out of the house, into the car, and to classes today. I really didn't want to come here today. How do we end this insanity? I'm not against more gun restrictions but at the same time there are lots of countries where there are many guns that don't have this, at least nowhere near this frequency.

  24. Pitchers and Catchers report in a few days. Has the broadcast schedule been announced yet? We are 2 weeks away from their first game and it seems most teams have announced their broadcast schedules by now. 🤷

  28. This is a pretty big thing to just gloss over. How many playoff series have the Sox won recently?

  29. There are better ways to speed up the game though. Pitch clock (coming), cutting down on pitching changes (already in effect), shorter commercial breaks (god forbid!), making the batters stay in the box (and actually enforce it). I could go on. It is what it is, and I get how marathon games aren't great for the players but at least give the game 2 more innings to finish organically before this BS.

  30. It’s fake baseball. May as well have them play dodgeball in the outfield for the win.

  31. Without significant nationwide gun restrictions this won't ever change. No where else in the world has the type of gun ownership the USA does and other Western Counties like Canada that do have pretty high gun ownership (but no where near approaching the USA) at least actually place restrictions on the types of guns that can be owned and make it a more rigorous process to get a gun. Add in that our healthcare system and access to mental health care services are trash and this is what you get.

  33. I don’t think anyone is looking at this like “let’s change baseball because we feel like it needs tinkering.” But this change makes sense for the same reason college football overtime makes sense: the likelihood of scoring in each possession is low in both sports, so an indefinite tiebreaker can last way too long. For baseball, this was fine when a two hour game could stretch to a three hour game, but the reality of MLB today is that the average game length is already long enough that the typical fan can barely fit it into their day. Die hards like all of us don’t care, but we have to realize that it’s bad for the game if it bleeds fans, and it’s really hard to maintain or grow internet in a product where your average consumption involves giving up on the game before it ends. I see this change as taking a handful more games per year accessible to the average fan to watch, and allowing thousands of fans to stick it out to the end of a game instead of bailing early, which is huge because that game will probably be the only one that most of those fans attend in the whole year.

  34. Well, except for three post-season series victories, a 50000+ sold out fanfest along with Soto, Tatis, Jr., Bogaerts, Machado, Musgrove, Darvish, Snell and Hader...pretty much exactly the same. And maybe the competition in the NL West is just a wee BIT stiffer... However, that's a great selling point for all those ticket agents desperate to generate some commissions, though. Just switch the years around in the way one perceives the two respective franchises. And let's not forget the White Sox have unlimited financial flexibility at #12 in current MLB payrolls, while the Padres simply have to be tapped out, right? No way they can afford an extension for Soto AND a new deal for Machado simultaneously, right? Meanwhile, Sox looking to dump Giolito and Anderson over the next two seasons....arguably two of the top 3-5 most popular and/or identifiable members of the team. Without Anderson, it's basically Dylan Cease and Luis Robert's unfulfilled potential. Montgomery might actually be third, with Colas 4th...unless one is a huge Eloy or Vaughn fanboy.

  39. Then implement a tie....inventing a rule where a guy is put on 2nd is just dumb.

  40. I agree with others saying it's pretty stupid to start on 2b... Why 2b? Why not 3b? Why not 1b? Who made the statement that it needs to be 2b? 2b just makes it a sacrifice, sacrifice, score run. Other team, sac, sac, score. 1b would put an emphasis on steals, on hits. Putting the guy on 2b is the problem to me. I don't love the rule in general, but I've grown to learn to live with it - it is pretty exciting, but it's just kinda silly to do 2b instead of 1b.

  44. Well, they've spent $1.4 billion on just 8 contracts since Myers/Hosmer and will likely eclipse the total franchise value of the White Sox at $1.7-$1.75 billion when/if Machado or Soto sign new extensions. I would venture to guess Hahn hasn't spent 1/3rd that amount during his entire tenure. And yes, it could still backfire spectacularly...the Dodgers have that much payroll space opening next year and one of the deepest farm systems in the game. Simply can't believe we are a week or two away from ST and there was more palpable excitement about the 1985-89 teams. $30 parking and increased ticket prices for this mediocre product? Get outta here.
