MLB players are already under strict testing, there should be zero reason why any unvaccinated athlete should not be allowed to participate assuming negative tests.4 points

J agree with Tony LaRussa. He expressed his opinion just like Kapler did and he wasn’t disrespectful about it and respected Kapler’s rights. I think some of the posters on this site could learn something from Tony about respectful and courteous behavior towards others. I am a US Army Vietnam era veteran and the flag is a symbol of honor and sacrifice to all servicemen and women and I personally don’t believe anyone should be making their symbolic political statements and protests during the National Anthem4 points

He is a well respected member of this forum and leads futuresox so maybe take your axe somewhere else4 points

My father is a veteran and we've discussed this topic multiple times together. He doesn't feel the flag has anything to do with representing our military, but a representation of our entire country...all 50 states. Having said that, if the flag is a representation of the country as a whole, then it means it also represents Gabe Kapler's right to not stand for a national anthem, and LaRussa's choice to voice his displeasure with it. Both are free to do that, which isn't possible in other places in the world. And one of the reasons for that obviously is what our military has accomplished in battle. I personally happen to side with Kapler, as I've been to different parts of the world and seen firsthand that other cultures aren't currently scared to send their kids to school or believe they may be killed when going to the grocery store. You have every right to feel the way you do. It doesn't make you right, my father right, or myself right.3 points

I'm really starting to wonder if Tony's insistence on off-days is having an opposite reaction on player health given that these are all soft tissue injuries. My wholly uninformed take is muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc., benefit from usage...keeps them loose, prevents tightening, etc. Or, to take a step further out on the conspiracy plank, could it be these guys are constantly lollygagging in practice, the gym, team stretches, etc., and then shock their bodies by actually trying in games...Tony has made it abundantly clear that he puts a lot of faith in conserving health, which means they'd likely not hear a peep if they were caught lollygagging. I don't know. Something changed since 2020 and TLR is the biggest change that's occurred.3 points

Not signing Machado. It would have meant complete buy-in from Jerry, but also, subsequent moves would just naturally look different. Grandal, Keuchel, or expensive relievers are getting nixed heavily in this scenario. The team likely trades Madrigal as a prospect, since Machado-Anderson-Moncada is now your infield. TLR is revolted at the idea of managing Machado, doesn't even entertain Jerry's offer.3 points

Not a single person person is calling him a savior. People are saying we should use the free roster spot youre for some bizarre reason saying they don’t need, to give him a shot for the series. That’s it. We’ve had awful production out of 2B all season and Leury is probably our main SS now. There’s no harm in giving Yolbert some at bats.2 points
-
We already know Leury, Harrison, Mendick, and Burger aren’t long term answers at 2B. Giving the kid a look should absolutely be under consideration when it doesn’t cost a 40 man spot and this team desperately needs an answer at 2B.2 points
-
The point would be to give the kid a look. The rest of the detritus on the roster should have no bearing.2 points
-
I understand they’re not technically playing a man short. They would still be dumb to not use the rules to their advantage and get an extra body up. Perfect excuse to see Yolbert for a series without even having to add him to 40 man. I would be astonished if they didn’t use the extra spot; would make no sense.2 points

Absolutely. People pick and choose if and how and where they protest. Protests aren't very effective unless they get people's attention. If you are trying to pull people together for change I question the effectiveness of alienating people who may be inclined to agree with you. Ask me to carry a sign, write letters, speak out against those horrors then I'm in. If you ask me to sit during the anthem I'm not joining in. Now some folks I agree with on the issue will criticize me, call me old and stupid, because I won't join in that style protest? That seems like a dumb strategy for change.2 points

Can we support the individuals serving while also not condoning the actions of the corrupt imperialist nation that sends young women & men to their deaths for the profit of the elite few? I, a veteran who served, honor your kid's service, because he probably served for the same reasons I did, but also recognize the very system that exploits our servitude for futile ends and then leaves us to fend for ourselves afterwards, irreparable trauma and all. Choosing to not stand for the anthem is not an insult to your son's or my service to this dying nation. We can "support the troops" while conscientiously objecting to the horrors this nation has wrought upon the world we live in.2 points
-
Your take is no one is insulting them. My take is different. What makes yours or mine any more correct? I support your right to sit. I have students who sit for the US Pledge but stand for the Texas Pledge and moment of silence. It's their choice. I have others that sit and play games on their phone the entire time. It's an interesting question really. If I describe you in a way you claim is an insult and I say it isn't, are you less insulted? I live in Military City USA and know how most active and retired duty members feel. I honor their feelings by standing. It's also similar to places of worship. Walk into a synagogue and cover your head out of respect, walk into a Christian church and uncover your head out of respect. I guess some folks might want to use that time and place as an opportunity to protest and claim it isn't disrespectful. More power to them. I'll continue to stand for the hundreds of millions of Americans that make this a great country while supporting those that choose to sit for the thousands that make it bad.2 points

The sox system has really failed to produce much except for first basemen after the first group was up. They developed a great core but really the depth behind that is lacking, especially middle infield and starting pitcher. Nobody develops stars all the time but it helps if you can at least call up a 1 WAR player in case of injury so you don't have to play a negative WAR replacement. The sox top 8 or 9 players are as good as any team but depth is lacking and any injury can't be compensated very well. In contrast if you look at the dodgers they always have some injuries too but their replacements are at least competent so they don't have to start a starter with a 7 era when someone goes down.2 points

20-30 years ago players were always taking the first pitch, many coached in high school or little league have been saying don't swing at strike 1, i. E take until a called strike. However in the last years teams have increasingly gone away from auto takes, i. E you swing at every "fat" pitch in every count because you don't want to give the pitcher free strikes. Pitchers are so good these days that you just can't afford to take strike one down the pipe. Yeah, it is bad if you chase ball one but just auto taking is bad in today's game. Problem is the sox have quite a few hitters with very high chase rates. Robert, tim, burger, pollock, leury and Harrison all chase a lot, vaughn, engel and abreu (he actually improved quite a bit in that regard) are about average and really only grandal has plus plate discipline. However newer studies suggest that plate discipline isn't really about approach and patience (few players want to swing at everything) but about the physical ability to project the second half of the ball flight based on how the first half looks and modern pitchers make that harder with tunneling which means trying to make the first half of the pitch flight look the same on all pitch types. Don't forget decision point of swinging when the ball is like 20 ft away so you don't have that info for your decision. 20 years ago those players were simply told to work the count a little and take a few pitches and that works for some time but then pitchers realize that quickly and just attack the zone early and then make that guy still chase later in the count. So the only way to improve that is improving the physical ability to predict ball flight in player development. Some teams have used VR programs for pitch recognition and also some gadgets (like there is a hoop with some triangles in it and you throw a pitch through it and then the hitter tries to memorize where in the hoop the pitch passes through but I don't know if sox player dev uses those tools. Modern pitching makes that quite tough.2 points

Came back 4 times to win without Tim and Robert. Props to all the guy who got the job done. Now DFA Harrison call up Yolbert and infused this bunch with some youth like Burger who have some desire.2 points

If Anderson is even out 4 weeks, the hole will be far too big to dig out of when he gets back. The season is over.2 points

I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but watching the highlights, I noticed that pretty much every big hit by the Sox today in extras was on an inside sinker. I don't have the numbers out in front of me or anything, but I swear that's a pitch the Sox have been pulling into the ground all year. Instead I saw Engel and Abreu take that pitch to CF and Burger elevate it for a line drive single. Maybe they're finally making some adjustments. Cause they're gonna need it without TA to carry this offense.2 points

I would absolutely tear it down but only if the entire front office was replaced first.2 points

Not pinch hitting for Harrison, one of the main reasons we had to go to extras.1 point

Well this whole season has gone to shit and it’s only Memorial Day weekend. How lovely.1 point

I’ve already accepted he’s gone, so trade him. Jerry is never going to hand out a $200M+ contact to a pitcher, especially one that is the player union rep, especially one that he fought over $10K with.1 point

Bottom line, they need to fire the training staff. The injuries are only getting worse than improving. Obviously things haven’t changed from last year.1 point

Happy with the win, but this team sure has some problems. Game should have never gone into extras.1 point
