Until specific groups are not marginalized, assaulted, and given less rights based on this...It is brave for those to speak out and declare their truth to us all and it is needed for others to speak out in love and support. No matter the situation.4 points

Based on populations there are dozens more who are and just afraid to say it out loud. It would be nice if people who are straight didn't cause so many problems for those who weren't so they didn't have to "deal" with it either, but that isn't the case.4 points

i"m loving this ST. With all the BS surrounding TLR , Covid, the strike, shortened season it seems like its been a long time since we've had a normal uplifting spring, outside of the Clevinger and Hendriks stories.2 points

This is why Burger makes more sense on the roster than Sheets does though imo2 points

Looking at these roster options, I’m still very annoyed we didn’t go out and sign a quality 4th OF who hits from the right side. That lack of depth is going to bite us at some point next year.2 points

Plugging Grandal in at 1st for a few games is as negligent as putting AV in the OF.2 points

1) Lance Lynn has the body type of a first baseman. 2) The Sox love playing people out of position. 3) ??? 4) Profit!2 points

Woof, Leury beter not be getting 2 starts per week. So we're making Andrew Vaugh a part-time player to give Gavin Sheets at bats. Woof. Yes, I realize Sheets has been better again RHP to this point, but their upsides are not even close.2 points

Without the shift, two defensive factors become very important: 2nd baseman's range and right fielder who can be strong throwing to 3rd. Two weak spots from the past could become strengths.2 points

Hand Romy or Leury a 1B glove. Colas has experience at 1B. Honestly, backup 1B is pretty low on the list of worries.2 points

In your scenario, who is the DH/1B when Vaughn or Eloy take a day off, or Eloy is in the OF? Particularly against RHP? I like Sheets on the bench for that role, and for late-game pinch hitting opportunities. So my bench to start the season would be Sheets, Leury, Romy, and Zavala. I don't think it's necessary/worth giving a roster spot to Marisnick/Hamilton/Reyes. I'm fine with Leury in CF once every week or so (Leury is a better CF than RF), and Leury/Romy in RF. Give Romy a shot to prove all the offseason work we've been hearing about translates to success. If he isn't cutting it over the first month of the season he can be sent down and one of the minor league OFs can be brought up. But if Hamilton or Marisnick are given a roster spot out of Spring Training, even if they're struggling offensively (which is likely) they'll be given a long leash because getting rid of them means they need to be DFA'ed. Romy's spot can be temporary. Leury is going to get a few months on the roster regardless, and I'm pretty confident he can have a bounce-back to being a useful back-up after an injury-plagued season, if he's used sparingly. If not, and other players are showing they're more deserving, he could get cut in July. Injuries can throw everything into a blender, so it doesn't make any sense to be cutting players now that might be needed later on.2 points

If he is tipping 20 percent then he is all good. Not sure how that paints him as cheap lmao2 points

I'm among those who think this is a positive move for the Sox. The Sox were unwatchable last year for the most part, except for a few players, who came to play everyday and gave it their all. For position players, that list was very short. Jose Abreu and Elvis Andrus. Everyone else got hurt, just stunk it up, or had terrible splits. And most also sucked at fielding and baserunning. Andrus might regress, but I believe him when he says he found something in his swing. He was a breath of fresh air on a team filled with prima donnas who were all hype and no substance. He was a little like Johnny Cueto was for the starting staff. He can't turn the team around himself, but maybe he'll embarrass Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada into playing better.2 points

Despite what you think about Leury vs. Andrus these are the facts. Last year in 1 season Andrus had more fWar than Leury has had in the last 4 seasons combined 3.5 to 2.9. However fluky you think it is , it happened. It might not be likely to happen again but a 2.0 fWar would be the 1st time that's happened at 2nd base for the Sox in a very long time., I think someone said since Iguchi. One player never makes or breaks a team. Ohtani and Trout can't push the Angels into the playoffs. Only a full team playing good baseball together can do that. Good defense, smart baseball and good base running . These are fundamental things that need to be done by all players. These things elevate a mediocre player into a good player. I am not against playing young players. I might be the guy highest on Colas on the whole board. In his case they really need his arm in RF and there's no one else who can give them that . I also believe in his bat. He has a much better chance of succeeding than the overhyped Romy or the not yet ready for prime time Sosa. Nothing suggests Romy is anything special either but I hope they both kill it in ST & AAA and make life hard on the decision makers. Andrus will be gone soon enough and the Sox have more than just Sosa knocking on the door in the infield with Ramos and Rodriguez. Youth will be served eventually on the Sox infield.2 points

He has a use on the roster, just not the one that has been enacted for the last 6 years.2 points

I mean if he can get him to be pre 22 Leury, he has a use on the roster. Who knows if that is possible or not, but it is nice to hear he isn't being given the job, even if he probably is.2 points

The better defensive SS is at 2B. Only in this organization.2 points

I don’t think sheets is in the running for starting RF. Was at first two spring training practices, Sheets is not even working out with outfielders, strictly with the 1B group. Makes it seem that we’ll either see Colas or Eloy (with Sheets or Burger as DH if it’s Eloy)1 point
-
He's supposed to have a very quick bat. I mean if it was that long you'd think someone could have exploited it especially lefties but his minor league numbers as far as batting average, slugging and OPS were actually better against LHP. A lot less AB's of course which is always the case but it was over 100 and over 400 vs. RHP. Really seems to have a good idea how to hit against both handed pitchers. He just has to be more selective .1 point

If they're willing to eat Leury's money that means they're confident they won't have to eat any of the s%*# bags money.1 point

At this point, the cash is spent regardless of whether you cut him. The only thing that matters is whether they think they can create a better 26 man roster without him.1 point

Pretty sure this is a modified version of the "everyone has to earn their spot" speech that team staff roll out every Spring Training.1 point
-
I am not advocating for this but to answer your question of who else can be the dh/1b, the semi-obvious answer would be Grandal to keep a left handed bat in the lineup. I could especially see this early in the year while we learn if his health/bat has returned. Who knows, he is as likely to require full rest vs playing a less demanding defensive position.1 point

Leury isn't gonna be sent to the minors/released lol Unless he's hurt or some drama goes down, he's our utility guy and I'm fine with it as long as he isnt asked to play every day1 point
-
while true he's got to compete, there's little chance he's cut out of ST. However if his numbers are poor through Memorial day? I can see the sox biting the bullet. Leury outside of last year has more value than Sosa or Romy have in the short-term. But that changes with every at-bat. it's getting closer and closer to one of those guys being a better player.1 point
-
You get four bench spots. One has to be a catcher (likely Zavala) and one has to be someone who can play CF well (probably Marisnick or Hamilton). If the Sox see Sheets as a potential everyday player, then he could use a year in AAA where he gets to face left-handed pitching. If they're resigned to him being a platoon bat, then he needs to be on the roster as the DH/1B any time Eloy or Vaughn are not in the lineup. If you don't keep Sheets that leaves two more spots and you can keep both Leury and Romy. If you keep Sheets that leaves only one spot left and Leury gets it unless the Sox DFA him, which they should do because I think Romy would provide more value in that role.1 point

Yeah, I mean what team would be dumb enough to play short a roster spot for a long period of time? Hahaha ha1 point

Normal for any adjustment on a slider, but especially on a slower curveball when he's reacting FB first and then dropping his hands...that hitch or load. With Burger, they always referred to it as a T-bar swing.1 point

He’s better than our 4th option in the minor leagues. Amazing argument.1 point

He’s not good, but he’s better than like Yolbert Sanchez and we’re paying him regardless. If he’s awful again in 23, sure DFA him if/when you have a better option. But makes no sense to do that at the moment.1 point

Athletic training is such a minefield. Somewhere some trainer has to step up and say "do not weight train to the point that you're adding 20+ pounds. If you are a pitcher you can maybe experiment with adding close to 10 lbs to your legs or lower body to improve your drive off the mound. A real baseball trainer can't just be about the proper way to lift weights. They have to understand whats best for each position on the field , each players physiology and health history and the after effects of Covid and tailor the needs of the player accordingly. The really need to be experts in quite a few fields along with acute knowledge of baseball. If you are a hitter perhaps a 5-10 lbs to your upper body but wrists are so important you don't really have to add much weight because how much weight can you really put on your forearms and keeping your wrists strong ? Now I'm not an expert in these things by any stretch of the imagination. But when you finish growing and are in your physical prime generally from 18 to mid to late 20's years old , the weight you are in those years is generally the weight you should maintain where you are at your most athletic self generally .Obviously the maturation of your body may add some pounds but it's up to you to distribute it where you need it as well as where your genetics put it. Strength and weight gain without maintaining flexibility, quickness, speed and athleticism and putting it where it should be can be more of a detriment than a help. Diet and stamina training, expanding your lungs by running or lower impact stamina training like life cycles will help too. But this thing about just gaining muscle all over is not for baseball players which is a finesse sport. Legs and core most important. Flexibility in your legs and back and a strong stomach should prevent a lot of pulled leg muscles but again if you have any unnatural curvature of your spine like scoliosis it's even more important to keep your core strong. A trainer should know all of these things about a player he is training. One size does not fit all. Even a smart guy like Giolito who is always looking for ways to get better somehow was misinformed about gaining so much extra weight. These players are young and impressionable. They may make decisions about their own bodies without fully understanding what they need to understand . They may have a buddy from their country who can tell them how to add muscle but without all the proper knowledge they truly need to actually help them become a better baseball player. I don't know if the Sox have one person who is the kind of guy I am talking about but if they do they need to direct the players to that guy about how they can become a better player through training specifically geared to them. I'm not even sure if the Sox management is fully informed enough to hire the right guy(s) for the job.1 point
