I think your prognosis is harsh and premature. Let's actually slow the jets and let Gonzalez go through the minors before you call this guy a bust and wasted draft pick. From your comment: You can get away with that against horseshit pitching and swinging a metal bat but big league pitchers would absolutely destroy him on the outer half of the plate. You realize you are talking about the SEC which is probably the top college baseball conference. They have arguably produced the most, if not close to the most lifetime major league players. These horseshit pitchers from this SEC conference have produced the following pitchers, just to name a few who seem to have made the transition of horseshit pitching in college to the majors: Max Scherzer - Missouri Dane Dunning - Florida Kevin Gausman - LSU Sonny Gray - Vanderbilt Alex Lange - LSU Aaron Nola - LSU David Price - Vanderbilt Your comment: Swinging a metal bat but big league pitchers would absolutely destroy him on the outer half of the plate. The following players have played in the SEC using that metal bat and somehow made the successful transition to the major leagues just to name a few: Pete Alonso - Florida Alex Bregman - LSU Walker Buehler - Vanderbilt Dansby Swanson - Vanderbilt Christian Walker - SC Bryan Reynolds - Vanderbilt DJ LeMahieu - LSU Nathaniel Lowe - Miss St I appreciate your harsh negative review of Gonzalez, but I could counter easily and list extensive reviews of people who do like his chances and potential. It's not like he was doing this in some mid major baseball conference. Btw, your final comment about it's an awful way to draft. Actually it was a very smart and safe pick. SS is a premium position. Since he can play SS, he can play 3B or 2B in the future. Plus if he is good and we don't need a SS, 2B or 3B, then he is a valuable asset to possibly trade. The fact is, the Sox haven't had many good left handed power hitters that could also hit for BA for many years now. It's nice to see the Sox tried to address that need. None of us know if Gonzalez will make it, but nobody knew if the above mentioned players from the SEC would make it either. Let's have this debate in a few years watching this dude either fail or excel in the Sox farm system.6 points

Man.......so many hot takes here about draft picks when most know nothing about them OR not enough about them. I dislike this team and organization right now but willing to let these guys develop before making sweeping negative generalizations about them as players.6 points

Giolito getting a divorce, a deeply personal matter that we shouldn't speculate on. Some people: "How does this reflect the White Sox organization?"5 points

4th round: Calvin Harris, C from Ole Miss. The scouting video of him is...not generous about his ability defensively, nor his ability to not hit ground balls. https://www.mlb.com/video/2023-draft-calvin-harris-c?t=mlb-draft He'll fit right in!5 points

He opens up early and steps in the bucket to artifically create power. You can get away with that against horseshit pitching and swinging a metal bat but big league pitchers would absolutely destroy him on the outer half of the plate. At least they know they have to fix his swing which is interesting because they also thought they had to fix Bradfields swing but Bradfield is twice the athlete Gonzalez is so why take Gonzalez over Bradfield. Because Gonzalez fills a need. That's an awful way to draft.4 points

The great thing about drafting SS is that most, if they can play SS, can play anywhere except P and C. Although, a guy like TA, would be a good C.4 points

It'd most likely be Gonzalez moving. Colson's gonna get here first + faster. It's a good problem to have Colson, Ramos, Gonzalez, Popeye, Sosa, and Burrowes (except Ramos, but he's got 3rd) all up the middle as prospects. You take that all day over doubling down on loading up at 1st base and corner OF.4 points

Calvin Harris is set to sign for $600K (about $25K over slot), according to the Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA newspaper). https://www.telegraphherald.com/sports/local_sports/article_c2754f22-1f51-11ee-bd1d-1f14020aedf0.html They also had a nice article about him on Sunday: https://www.telegraphherald.com/sports/local_sports/article_82c1c606-1cf6-11ee-9d45-a7cd5ff0620a.html Sounds like the Ole Miss coaches love him and nobody will out work him. My brother-in-law coached him in high school and has only great things to say about him and his family. I'll be rooting for this kid.3 points

He's signing. He's getting paid but I still think he made a mistake reclassifying and left money on the table. The Sox know him as well if not better than anyone so I hope they're patient and give him all the time he needs.3 points

With the caveat that even the absolute best people in the business fail at this constantly my issues with Gonzo are this: If he's not a SS (and imo looking at his film and reports he's not in MLB) then he's a 2B or 3B. At 2B he'd need to be league average defensively in order to be a solid regular as I don't see how he projects as much more than a 260/310/400 hitter. If he's a 3B with the same slash line he better be elite defensively. I dunno, he just seems destined to be utility guy most of the time, maybe a league average player 1/3 and he has zero star potential it seems.3 points

Yeah, I mean if he shifts to 2nd...if you have a LH 50-55 hit and power 2B with solid D that would be fine and playing at the rate his HR totals should be OK with his pull tendencies. Maybe high teens? IMO, between him and Montgomery one of them hopefully should stick at SS.3 points

I was just on the call with Shirley. He thinks they got two first rounders tonight. 4 pitch mix, loud stuff, was excellent on the cape and this fall. Said they wouldn't have had a shot at him had he pitched this season.3 points

Hahn probably had some influence at pick #15 but GM's arent making these picks anymore. The scouting report is taking the guys who they think are best in each spot who also fit into the bonus pool. White Sox should have some extra $$ to play with.2 points

Drafting a guy who just had TJS and a guy who needs to be converted from a reliever don't sound like that.2 points

Gonzalez is seemingly the 2B of the future, with his profile. I'm fine with the pick, I was just more so pissed that Boston grabbed Teel right before us, when he had fallen to that range.2 points

I think the sarcasm is very clear and needed here. Peeps here are so frustrated due to our POS owner who doesn't give a s%*#, as well as the fact he won't fire his delusional clown GM. As a result, that is why many of the posts need a good amount of sarcasm and humor; in order to avoid getting too upset and depressed over this trainwreck organization. ?2 points

If both do end up working out and make it to the majors, it’s a good problem to have. They can figure it out then. I don’t think he sticks at SS personally, and I think the Sox will end up putting him at 2B. A possible IF of Gonzalez (2B), Montgomery (SS) and Ramos (3B) would probably be the ideal scenario IMO.2 points

15. Chicago White Sox — Jacob Gonzalez, SS, Mississippi Grade: A Another player like Shaw and Teel where, regardless of spot, his selection would receive an A. Gonzalez had been talked about as a potential top-five pick before sliding all the way to No. 15. He has a well-rounded profile, with a bat that will hit for average and power and the ability to stay at shortstop. He might not have any tools that jump off the page, but he also has no major flaws, making him a very safe prospect here. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/mlb-draft-grades-2023-live-picks-results/a6nkkz2hshjegc3hg23rkefb2 points

https://lsutigerswire.usatoday.com/2023/07/09/lsu-baseball-grant-taylor-chicago-white-sox-mlb-draft-second-round/ Can't have enough injured pitching in your rotation. Thinking Jerry wants to pocket the money with Grant returning to LSU, because that is how Jerry rolls.2 points

I’m thrilled with the selection and can’t believe he fell this far! I doubt he sticks at SS but Montgomery/Gonzalez looks like a decent infield for the future.2 points
