  6. When researching the MLB amateur draft on Baseball-Reference, I'd always run into Bend, Boise and Miami on the franchise list. I never really gave it a thought, figuring it was some leftover place-holder when the site was being created, or something. Turns out, independent minor league teams used to be able to participate in the Rule 4 draft. Only 4 teams ever took advantage of this. I ran into Bend's draft picks while looking at the White Sox 1971 draft, where they took Bill Sharp in the 2nd round, instead of George Brett or Mike Schmidt. (Some things never change.) Turns out, Hawaii was trying to become an expansion franchise, and started building a team ahead of the next round of expansion. Hawaii contracted an independent team in Bend, Oregon to be their minor league franchise. The following is a SABR article some here might find interesting. https://sabr.org/research/article/the-next-pick-goes-to-the-miami-miracle-independent-minor-league-teams-in-the-amateur-baseball-draft/ Sorry is this seems way off what the focus of the board is. Please feel free to delete. It is baseball related, and I'm being driven nuts by refreshing MLB Trade Rumors.com, SoxTalk and Twitter. I figured somebody else might want a break.

  7. Or sooner. If he puts up a monster 1st half this year, I'd be looking to trade him at the deadline. Can't screw around and wait for more injuries. A high performance healthy 1st half would mean he put up 1.5 years of good numbers and good health. Without going through his injury history my guess is prior to that he usually didn't play 3 months without getting hurt and missing significant time . And if he did it was never near his upside for very long.

  8. I think they trade him before spring training and the return looks something like a high impact position player, a high impact pitcher and a medium impact player.

  9. I will be honest, I want him traded prior to opening day because I really don’t want to have to care how anyone on this roster performs.

  10. Good move for him because the initial 50m was probably taken up by "handlers" and the current 88m deal is way below market so he needs to get paid on the next one.

  11. Heard the question asked yesterday.....If Flus was fired today, would any other team hire him as their HC? And if not, doesn't that mean you can do better?

  12. That’s a bit of an excuse. Hendriks publicly announced his cancer diagnosis on January 8, 2023, well before the season started. Knowing they lost their Allstar closer, who did they bring in to replace him? It definitely didn’t have to be as bad as the stat @Lip Man 1 posted. The Royals signed Aroldis Chapman on January 27, 2023 for a paltry $3.75 million. Think he wouldn’t have chose to sign on as the White Sox closer over going to the Royals for the same money?

  13. Lol @ Cashman thinking this Stroman thing will scare us. Their fanbase hates him, he hates them. They will go together like peanut butter and WD40. Go ahead and sign him NY.

  14. Couple of ways to look at this, not sure what’s going on: - Yanks don’t want to pay the money or prospects for Snell/Cease - Yanks can still add Cease to go with Stroman, as this gives them two starters for the price of Snell - leaked interest to try and get Sox to lower asking price

  15. I still love love how the Orioles fans insisted that their younger prospects like Basallo (19) and Coby Mayo (just turned 22) were untouchable but at the same time didn’t understand why a 25.5 year old Joey Ortiz may have lost some value and wouldn’t be the headliner in a Cease trade. Take our old “prospects”, please! ?

  16. Really glad for him. Nice to hear some good news for a good man.

  17. yeah I would've thought going into last season that Kelly/Bummer/Graveman/Lopez should've been enough to fill in for Hendriks and that signing a dysfunctional player like Chapman probably would've just made the clubhouse a worse place to be. beyond that, he was pretty bad in 2022, lost his spot to Clay Holmes, went on the IL as a result of a bad tattoo, then was left off the playoff roster for skipping practice. don't see any reason the Sox should've signed him even in hindsight

  18. Think we can get Joey Ortiz from the Orioles in a Robert trade?

  19. This is honestly a refreshing change of pace from most of what's going on here lately. Thank you for posting this.

  20. Why wait 2 years? May as well trade him with more than 2 years of control. Luis Robert may sell some tickets for Reinsdorf over the next two seasons but he isn’t leading the Sox to the playoffs.

  21. I can't see how anyone would grade fields above stroud. They chose the draft pick capital and Moore over stroud/young. For their situation they needed the capital. Different situation this year.

  23. At this point, his trade value, will never be higher, trade him now and get a ton of talent.

  24. He is so fucking gone 12 months from now!!

  25. less than I expected him to get paid, but he's probably a 4th or 5th starter honestly. he was "good" in JCL last season, very good K/BB ratio but his stats also look shockingly similar to Foster Griffin, a guy who will likely not pitch in the MLB again. he was probably better than his teammate Trevor Bauer though which should show people why he's not worth having on a MLB roster, why should your 5th starter be a headcase who 4 different women have accused of sexual assault?

  26. Who is starting the Luis Robert trade rumor thread?

  27. Holding on to him would be just about the dumbest thing I can think of. He needs to be gone before they report. I would rather trade him for an underwhelming package than see him get hurt and be worthless.

  28. Hypothetically, the Orioles could be offering something like Kjerstad, Norby and Beavers, but the Sox are asking for Westburg also. I do think all the headlines of “Sox will hold on to Cease” are overblown based off what Rogers wrote.

  29. The cubs are paying Smyly $12 to be a swingman so I don’t mind this investment. As for Cease I think the Sox will get a Kings ransom for him eventually, I just think it won’t be this winter. It’s certainly possible I just think the market isn’t as robust as it will be once the top guys like Montgomery and Snell sign at the very least. Once we are in season there is only one way to acquire talent and while there will probably be other similar pitchers on the market, Cease will have the advantage of being both affordable and under control for a second year. The downside of waiting is that Cease could get hurt or underperform. Even if he underperforms look at what Giolito brought in at the deadline. If he’s hurt and it’s not TJ you still get another crack next season. The upside is that he comes back to being the pitcher we know he can be and brings in a top 10-20 prospect (in the mlb) plus at the deadline. I would roll the dice and wait unless Getz is blown away by an offer.

  30. They had Kendall Graveman on the roster, who was a closer with Seattle. At some point, the players have to produce. I wouldn't have wanted Chapman on this team.

  31. I want the two best players I can get. The add-on's aren't important to me. Quality not quantity.

  32. Mayo would be a tremendous get as headliner from the Orioles. Big Pop and arm. Should be able to play passable third base, or possibly RF.

  35. I just don’t think $325M is a smart move even for the Dodgers, whereas if I were a Cubs fan I would be happy with this signing based on the risk reward. If he stays healthy, he will get $15M-$30M more, perhaps up to $50M. That’s where the 5 - 10 Xs comes into play. If the fWAR difference is 1-1.5 per year over the next 2-4 years, the Cubs win out and aren’t stuck, whereas 10 years for a pitching contract rarely if ever is a wise move. Its the same with the Cease trade. The marginal performance difference between acquiring a similar starter in FA is far better than pissing away 2-4 top prospects. The “savings” from Cease’s combined $20M arb years is far less than the contract savings from the six years X the number of prospects you give away. It’s why smart teams trade for prospects and dumb ones like the Sox have consistently traded them for pitchers in their early to mid 30s. Hoping Getz reverses course on this strategery.

  36. Bowden’s latest article in the Athletic is a bunch of Q&A, but with several questions on Cease. Says to no surprise that the Orioles & Yankees are leading the pursuit and that Getz is asking for too much right now. He then addressed a specific question on a hypothetical from BAL of Westburg + Kjerstad/Cowser + Povich + Urias + a lower level prospect or two and said that “should be pretty close to what a final trade would look like”. I’d be pretty ecstatic if we could get Westburg + Kjerstad + Povich.

  37. Honestly reminds me a little of like 2019-2020 sox where like, obviously it was on the right track but made no sense what tehy were starting to do (encarnacion, mazara)

  38. Sigh. SIGGGH. If you have receipts for me, obviously I was not the most anti-eberflus. I said I wanted the names. Well the names are in and they are good man. They are good. They aren't even the "I love Ben Johnson" type thing, the experienced head coaches are GREAT. If this was howie roseman, you'd say "hey, he gets it". Zero chance they are correct, because if they were, they wouldn't have been hired by George McCaskey. That said...no to frank reich. No to thomas brown. Yes to Kliff Klingsbury (would be insane though, no chance. Unless he hates having to deal with recruiting under transfer portal) Yes to Zac Robinson (but why would he?) Yes to Ken Dorsey (maybe, but he seems like a jerk) Yes to Klint Kubiak Okay with Greg Olson (former Raiders OC and replaced Dave Canales and currently Seahawks QB coach) (Not the TE) Darrell Bevell - still has a good reputation, but, quite frankly his last two stops were atrocious. I mean the guy was in charge of Lawrences rookie year. But he's just had 2 years under Mike McDaniel. Intrigued by Tavita Pritchard - Bienemy's QB coach, former stanford OC Down on Pep Hamilton I left of Bienemy...because I just find it so improbable. But great if it happens?

  39. I have a much bigger problem at this point with them keeping Fields than I do Flus.
    2 points
  40. I feel like keeping Eberflus makes it more likely that Fields is staying. Also, there's no "trading down" to get MHJ and getting Williams. You either get Williams or trade down to get MHJ or take Williams and give New England a ransom for MHJ

  41. Love to have another rookie QB tied to a lame duck HC and probably GM. Good luck finding a solid OC to come in under Eberflus.

  42. that could be the case. it's just as likely not true. the sox have yanked him around since the minors and he might have been a convenient whipping boy for the entire train wreck last year. lots of guys struggle their 1st year in the majors. if i were another team, he'd be a guy i'd try to get as a buy low candidate.

  43. Seems to be a lot of negotiating through the press the pass few days. Whether NYY is actually interested in Stroman or not, this feels like their counter to Getz’s comments yesterday. There is probably some truth to all three points, but putting it out there that NY is looking elsewhere definitely feels aimed at Getz to me.

  44. I dont think Hal Steinbrenner wants to shell out 200 million for a 31 year old pitcher whose BABIP and LOB% suggest regression is coming and after they just got burned bad by Rodon. I'm not seeing it. Hal cares about money and there's real risk there. Get your cheap 2 years for 25m for Cease, and a draft pick on top. Jones, Hampton, Lalane and Vivas.
