It's not just the pitching staff. I think the Sox have got like 10 legit big leaguers on their entire roster, and not all of them are good. (Bummer, Cease, Kopech?, Crochet?, Santos?, TA, Moncada, Vaughn, Benintendi, Eloy.) The other 26 guys are a mix of prospects and roster fillers. Mostly the latter.

So far nothing the franchise has done since the hiring of Getz has improved the situation one iota. Addition by subtraction would have worked by sending Grifol out the door and of course hiring Getz was probably a big mistake.

I wouldn't' sign him to that right now if I was the White Sox and I wouldn't sign that right now if I was him. You don't sign him right now because what if he has a setback - you've added $8 million and gotten nothing out of it. I wouldn't sign that right now if I was him because I might find a better offer after the 2024 World Series once I do a throwing demonstration in the offseason, depending on who needs pitching and how the market goes. All this went out the window today, no one has any real motivation to do anything here until he's doing a pitching demonstration and hitting the high 90s again.

You could sign him to a 2 year deal where he gets very little year 1, and then $8M in year 2. And if I could bet on it, I would bet the Sox come to some sort of agreement like that.

Best thing for all concerned, if Liam really wants to return to the organization he'll have an opportunity to work out a new agreement. And this gives the Sox some "financial flexibility" (so they can waste it on injury-prone, retreads and stiffs) 😄

Like you and like most seasons since 1993 I didn’t watch a second of it. TV Ratings matter to indicate how much interest general fans have. Forty years ago, like the Kentucky Derby or the Super Bowl, many everyday wouldn’t follow MLB games every day (or horse racing or NFL), but would generally flip on the WS (and KD and SB). Now nobody gives a rats ass except for the SB. I don’t believe analytics played a role, but do believe less people watching games locally (minor leagues contraction) and playing games (pick up games, organized leagues) has played a role. Much of our recent immigration is from Latin America which has a baseball tradition. Growing numbers of people each can’t access games anymore (games all on cable) and after years of this you shrink collective interest. Out of sight, out of mind. The NFL could make a lot more money short term like the MLB and other leagues did and start putting all games on cable or pay per view, but they are smart enough to know having 95% of your games available for everyone is the best way to sustain and grow your business. Teams from the NBA and NHL have started to shift some or most games to over the air broadcasts with much success. Surround yourself with people who are better, smarter, and more capable than you are is an old business adage. For Getz that is so easy an assistant college coach and high school coach with zero MLB experience meet the criteria.

Getz must be self aware of how he (undeservedly) made it through the ranks, and now feels like he has to pay it forward by bringing someone unexperienced (even by his standards) to fill his position. That idea of finding the next Getz makes me sense to me than any other reason. You could find a lot of other cheap options who have atleast coached one day in a ML system.

My question, as usual with the Sox: Was Paul Janish even in the conversation for any other MLB team to take any sort of development role, let alone the head of player development for an entire organization?
