It’s so frustrating to see teams spend money to put finishing touches on their team, like Jays with Belt, while the Sox are too broke to fill giant holes.

Something else from his past will almost certainly emerge if he stays in the spotlight making hundreds of millions. There are so many reasons why MLB should stay the hell away. I am hopeful they will.

Sox should give a guy like Ken Giles or Alex Reyes a shot. Try to get a boom or bust type of signing. You probably could get Giles on a NRI with the possibility of closing as an enticement. No idea what the health status is on either of these guys though.

The other thing with Bauer is that if you sign him, you almost certainly know you will have to deal with him trending for something he does in the future. This isn't just these 2 women who made complaints against him, it's also his online persona, where he's bullied women by "quote-tweeting" things they dared to tweet about him so that his followers go after them, he's fiddled around with the antisemitic "George Soros is evil" stuff which won't go over well with any owners who happen to be Jewish, he's made "jokes" about trans people. You don't just have the risk of him abusing some woman again while you've signed him, you also have the darn near certainty that your team is going to have to deal with something else he says online.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I do think Bauer is toxic in enough ways where he might not actually pitch in MLB again.

The question has been asked about insurance in this thread, how that may impact the Sox moving forward. So I asked about this with a long time friend of mine who is a member of the mainstream Chicago media. This is the reply just FYI: "I know when the training staff told Jake Peavy there was nothing wrong with him, until his arm nearly came off, there was the issue of insurance and whether the salary would be covered by insurance. Rick Hahn was testy when he was asked whether insurance would cover the salary if Peavy missed the first 1/6th of the season. I think this is the case with Liam, but I'll ask around. I feel terrible for Liam, since he's a straight shooter who can see who's full of crap and who's giving an honest effort. I hope he's consulting with experts outside of Rush Hospital before making a decision on the treatments. I'm a big Crochet fan, but you can't beat experience in the late innings."

You completely misread what I way saying. In no way was I thinking what you’ve suggested here. I was thinking perhaps that the diagnosis killed trade talks, as opposed to the org thinking they could send him elsewhere. We haven’t heard him mentioned in trade speculation in a while and it simply crossed my mind, that is all. Again, my thought was that this shut down trade talks knowing he likely wouldn’t be available and not at all the callous thing you’ve suggested.

Yes. Not to disparage Bill, but he was a starter for one season (308 MLB games over 9 seasons) whereas Karkovice was a solid defensive catcher, and a full time starter for 5 straight seasons (1992-1996), after splitting the job for three years once he turned 25 (1989-1991). There is zero chance the org knew about this months ago and thought hmmm…maybe we can trade him before this goes public. This is life or death - he probably just found out in past week or two (give or take) and has to immediately begin treatment because you know this is serious s%*#. And this probably had no impact on his tendon / flexor strain that sidelined him. And just to say this a 2nd time because any speculation around this is just a bad look. Come on you really think Sox would have told him last year - hey delay treatment for a few months to finish the season so we can make a final push to maybe back in the playoff and than buy us some time so we can trade you….this isn’t delaying an ankle injury…this is delaying treatment on a life or death condition you are talking about. Zero and I mean zero chance Sox or Liam did that or even thought about it for even a nanosecond.

This is gutting. I have no doubt he will survive but he's widely regarded as the best person in the game. My friend works with Howard Brown, an LGBTQ health center in Chicago and the amount of work he has done for them is immense. Also remembering how vocal he was after the Supreme Court ruling. I'm so proud he's a White Sock. Hope this is a blip and he's back either later this year or next. Just hope he is ok.

I don't believe they lost money, either, at least not $10 million. JR has been crying poor for over 40 years, but after 40 years, he still holds onto the team. Don't care what the team is valued at. It is not going to be sold, so I find the number meaningless.

Yeah I’d love to see how those #’s make sense. Can’t be factoring in all revenue streams. There’s 0% chance teams like the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers aren’t making $ somehow. I don’t care how rich these owners are, there’s no way they are willingly losing 10’s of millions every year. Then again, maybe it’s just a business strategy to report losses for tax purposes? I’m not smart enough/too broke to fully understand how that works tho

I know Forbes is seemingly as accurate as we'll get on the public side, but I don't believe for a second the Sox lost money in 2021. Open up the books and prove it.

I'll go with 12. Officer Karkovice hit one of the longest and hardest hit homers I saw in person at old Comiskey, IIRC it was in 1989 and we were sitting way out in left centerfield in the upper deck about 5 rows up and Karko hit a laser that went over our heads by about 4 or 5 rows. When you think about it, it should have been a roof shot but as I said it was a laser shot, more of a line drive than a moon shot.

A team that has built up credibility with their fan base could pull it off like the Padres or the Mets. You also have teams that have no media coverage like Tampa, Oakland and to a degree Cleveland.

I am going to guess absolutely no one touches him with his exsiting contract, even if LAD was wiling to pay it. It is worth it for LA to try, but I doubt it happens. Seeing the article where LA met with him and he expressed no remorse or anything to try to soften a potential return, I doubt anyone else in MLB finds him palatable either.

My #1 non-negotiable is - the Bears should absolutely make sure they get a future 1st RP in next years draft. They should enter next year with 2 picks - if for nothing else in a trade down scenario, knowing whomever gets the #1 pick is going to take a QB, you are almost guaranteed that next year's pick will be Top 10 (and just as likely top 5). So you got to get that - cause that is hugely valuable. Beyond that - if you are hedging your bets, having that pick is huge, because if Fields is good - you have multiple assets to continue to build the team in the right area via the draft (and you can always use the asset to trade back and continue to add talent). But you also now have the option if Fields is bad, to have 2 high picks, which means if you don't think you have the QB - you have the ability take another swing at the QB (leveraging those 2 picks to move up in the draft if you ultimately need to) or to trade for a veteran option that is on the market. If I am Poles - I have to do that - because it means I'm sitting in the catbird seat and basically getting 2 shots at the QB (1 is Fields, the other is next year if Fields stinks) and you can do it without gutting your team in any scenario (if nothing else - next year's QB will be in an even better position).

First and foremost, this news really sucks and all our thoughts and prayers should be with Liam. I know he's a fighter and am confident he can kick cancer's ass and be back as a dominant closer. On a secondary note, if he's missing the season, do we have an insurance policy that covers his contract? If so, let's hope we spend this $18 million on other improvements to the team and not just put it in Jerry's pocket. If nothing else, let's donate these funds to the American Cancer Society. Get well soon Liam. We'll be praying for you!

Not sure what the point is here. If anyone believes Jerry lost $21 mil last year, then I have some breachfront property in New Mexico to sell you. And the Sox will sell for way more than 1.76 bil if it attracts open bidders.

I "lost money" on my home last year while picking up a lot of equity. Same principal here, they may have lost $10 mil, but the value of the franchise may have increased $100 mil. And let's remember that it's not like the ownership group is tossing in money each year. It's more debt they have to service. If they only lost $10 mil a year for all of the forty years this group has owned the Sox, $400 mil total, it would still be a great investment. NBA franchises are with more. Comparing to the Clippers probably isn't accurate. The Bulls are worth over $2billion. I wouldn't be surprised if Jerry received a nice raise this year as President. Don't think of the loss as him losing income. If they sell, it means a bank will be grabbing a little more off the top at closing. At $1.7 billion that $10 mil loss is very minor.

The Clippers sold for 2 billion ten years ago. The Sox are worth a lot more than 1.75 on the open market.

I’d rather spend $5 towards this than $25/30 for parking at the stadium lots.

My gosh he was a ballplayer. He wouldn't quit til he couldn't see/catch the ball anymore. What a stud. Where does Karko live now? Where does Fisk live now?
